The Mystery of the Oak Tree Decline
"Imagine a severe disease wipes out half of the Oak Trees in our nearby forest. Who loses? Obviously, animals eating acorns. But what about the earthworms deep in the soil? What about the hawks nesting in the high branches? How are they affected if there isn't a single connection on paper?"
Prompt the class: "If you tap a spider's web, only one corner moves, or does the entire web vibrate? Today, we are going to become that web."

The Web Construction
Physical yarn connection mechanics (30 Minutes)
Physical Layout
Have students stand in a spacious circle facing inward. If there are more than 12 students, double up roles or assign observers to map the connections on paper.
Yarn Rule
Students must hold their section of the string with two hands and keep it taut (slightly tight, but not pulled so hard that it slips).
Web Assembly Instructions

The Ultimate Source
Hand the yarn ball to the student designated as The Sun . They must hold the end of the string firmly.

First-Level Producers
The Sun tosses the ball of yarn to an organism that uses solar energy (e.g., Oak Tree or Wild Blackberry ) while holding their end.

Expanding Consumers
The Oak Tree wraps the yarn once around their palm, then tosses it to an animal that eats acorns (e.g., White-Tailed Deer or Eastern Chipmunk ).

Completing the Web
Continue this process, passing from predator to prey, and down to decomposers (e.g., Earthworm ), ensuring everyone in the circle is connected.
Environmental Perturbation Prompts
Once the web is complete and tight, introduce the following disturbances. Instruct students to close their eyes and pull gently only when they feel a physical tug on their hands.
Scenario A: The Pesticide spray
"A homeowner sprays insecticide. The Honeybee dies. Honeybee, give a heavy tug on your string and drop it. Who felt that tug?"
Scenario B: Logging Activity
"An oak woodland is logged for construction. The Oak Tree drops their lines. Tally up everyone who feels their string go loose!"

Encourage sensory-based descriptions. Guide students to note that even those far away from the drop eventually felt the tension change.
