In Asch’s paradigm, a single true participant is placed in a room with 7-9 confederates. They are asked to state aloud which comparison line (A, B, or C) matches the standard. The confederates give unanimously incorrect answers.

Experimental Bias #02
Demand Characteristics
Source: 12 out of 18 critical trials featured unanimous, blatantly incorrect visual claims by confederates.
Critics argue that participants may conform simply because they guess the purpose of the study or want to avoid ruining the experimenter's dataset, a phenomenon known as demand characteristics.
Critique & Discuss:
- Did participants actually "see" the wrong line as correct, or did they simply fake agreement?
- Asch used an all-male sample of 123 college students. How does this selection restrict external validity?
Social Influence #03
Normative vs. Informational
NORMATIVE To be liked / avoid social isolation and friction.
INFORMATIONAL To be right / believing the group has superior information.
Deutsch & Gerard (1955) split conformity into two paths: normative social influence (compliance) and informational social influence (internalization).

Unanimity #04
The Dissenter Effect
Unanimous: 37%
1 Ally: 5.5%
When Asch introduced a single confederate who gave the correct answer (a dissenter/ally), conformity rates plummeted from roughly 37% to just 5.5%.

- Why does a single ally dismantle the social pressure of an entire group so completely?
- What happens if the dissenter gives an answer that is different, but *also* incorrect?

Ethics #08
The Ethical Cost
Deception: Participants believed they were taking a simple visual perception test, not a social experiment.
While participants experienced self-doubt, anxiety, and public embarrassment, Asch argued that thorough post-experiment debriefing was sufficient to mitigate psychological stress.
