CIVIC POWER WORDS
Word Power: Master these four foundational concepts to understand how societies organize power, make decisions, and work together.
1. Citizenship
[sit-uh-zuhn-ship] • noun
Being an official, recognized member of a country or community with legal rights, protections, and civic responsibilities.
Kid-Friendly Metaphor: Like joining a school sports team! You get to play and wear the jersey (your rights), but you also have to follow the coach and pass the ball (your responsibilities).
2. Constitution
[kon-sti-too-shuhn] • noun
The fundamental, supreme written law of a nation that defines how the government works and lists the rights of its citizens.
Kid-Friendly Metaphor: The ultimate game rulebook. It is written down so the referees (government) and the players (citizens) know exactly what the rules are and can't just make them up!
3. Republic
[ri-puhb-lik] • noun
A form of government where power belongs to the citizens, who elect representatives to make decisions and vote on laws for them.
Kid-Friendly Metaphor: Instead of the whole class shouting over what game to play at recess, you elect three classmates to form a "recess committee" to listen to everyone and choose fairly.
4. Sovereignty
[sov-rin-tee] • noun
The supreme independent power and authority of a country to govern itself and make its own decisions without outside interference.
Kid-Friendly Metaphor: Being the absolute boss of your own bedroom! Within your four walls, you decide how to organize your toys and nobody from next door can tell you otherwise.
