Introduction & Recap
Briefly recap the Protestant Reformation. Remind students that Martin Luther and others had challenged Church authority. Ask: "How might the Catholic Church respond to losing millions of followers?" Define the Counter-Reformation as the Church's multi-pronged effort to reform from within and stop the spread of Protestantism.
20 MIN
Timeline Creation Activity
Divide students into groups of 3-4. Distribute the Reformers Reveal Cards and the Church Timeline Worksheet .
Groups will use the cards to identify key moments and figures.
They must arrange them chronologically on a poster board.
Students should add visuals (drawings or provided icons) and brief descriptions explaining why each item was "revolutionary" for the Church.
10 MIN
Gallery Walk & Presentations
Groups briefly present one specific event or figure from their timeline to the class. Encourage students to compare their timelines: Did everyone prioritize the same events? Why might some groups highlight the Jesuits while others highlight the Inquisition ?
10 MIN
Critical Discussion
Facilitate a class discussion focused on long-term impacts:
"Was the Counter-Reformation a success? Why or why not?"
"How did the focus on education (Jesuits) change the Church's future?"
"How does the Baroque style reflect the Church's desire to 'wow' the public?"
Teacher Tips
Ensure students understand the difference between internal reform (fixing corruption) and external defense (fighting heresy). Encourage them to use specific terms like "heresy," "dogma," and "asceticism" during their presentations to build academic vocabulary.
