The Ultimate Cheat Sheet
The Periodic Table is a chart that organizes all known elements in the universe.
It's not random! It's arranged by a specific number called the Atomic Number.
Think of it like a grocery store: everything has a specific shelf and section so you can find it easily!
01. The Atomic Number
7 N Nitrogen
The Identity Card
The Atomic Number is the number of Protons in an atom's nucleus.
"Change the protons, change the element! It's like a person's DNA."
Periods
The Horizontal Rows (Left to Right)
Elements in a period have the same number of electron shells (energy levels).
There are 7 Periods on the table.
Period 1
Groups
The Vertical Columns (Up and Down)
GROUP 1
Also called Families.
Elements in a group have similar properties (they behave the same!).
The Landscape of Elements
Metals
Left Side (Mostly)
METALLOIDS
Non-Metals
Right Side
Metals are shiny, conductive (heat/electricity), and can be bent (malleable).
Non-Metals are dull, brittle (break easily), and poor conductors.
Elements in the Wild
Aluminum (Al)
Found in car rims and soda cans. Shiny and strong metal!
Silicon (Si)
A metalloid! Essential for the computer chips in your phone.
Neon (Ne)
A non-metal gas. Used to make bright, glowing signs!

Thinking Like a Scientist
If you discovered a new element that was shiny, but shattered instantly when you touched it (brittle), which category would it be the most difficult to classify into? Why?
Atomic Vocab Cards Atomic Blueprint Deck
Vocabulary Flashcards & Reference
Atomic Number
The total number of protons in an atom.
Example: Nitrogen (7) has 7 protons.
Period
A horizontal row on the table.
There are 7 periods on the chart.
Group (Family)
A vertical column on the table.
Elements share similar properties!
Metal
Shiny elements that are good conductors.
Example: Copper in electrical wires.
Non-Metal
Elements that are dull/brittle.
Example: Neon gas in bright signs.
Metalloid
Traits of both metals/non-metals.
Example: Silicon in computer chips.

NON-METALS

• Dull/Gaseous
Part 3: Lab Analysis
Item Why is it used? (Sample Answers) Soda Can (Al) Aluminum is a metal that is malleable (can be shaped) and strong. Phone Chip (Si) Silicon is a metalloid/semiconductor, useful for controlling electricity. Party Balloon (He) Helium is a non-metal gas that is lighter than air and non-reactive. Pencil Lead (C) Carbon (graphite) is a brittle non-metal that rubs off easily on paper.
Scientific Thinking Answer:
Metalloids would be the hardest to classify because they have traits of both (shiny like a metal but brittle like a non-metal).
