Rules Keep Safe Slides Kindergarten Social Studies • Civics
Lesson 1 of 3
Why Do We Need Rules?
Let’s find out how classroom rules keep our bodies safe, our feelings happy, and our playtime fair for everyone!
Massachusetts Civics Big Question
What are fair rules and why do we need them?
Circle Time Discussion
1
Imagine A Day With ZERO Rules!
Think & Wonder
Without Any Rules...
• Cars do not stop at red lights.
• Everyone pushes to get to the slide first.
• People grab toys right out of your hands!
How would you feel? (Scared, upset, or confused?)
With Fair Rules...
• Cars stop and let people cross safely.
• Friends take turns going down the slide.
• We ask nicely: "May I please have a turn?"
How would you feel? (Safe, happy, and calm!)
Rules are not to stop our fun—rules protect our fun!
2
Reason 1: Rules Keep Our Bodies Safe
Safety First
Walking Feet
We walk inside so no one trips, slips, or bumps their head!
Gentle Hands
We use our hands for building, helping, and high-fives!
Clean Floors
We put blocks away so our pathway stays clear and safe!
Turn to your neighbor: Show me your gentle walking feet motion!

Reason 2: Rules Make Sure Everyone Gets a Turn
Kind Community
Taking Turns
When three friends want the red tricycle, a timer helps everyone get equal ride time. Nobody gets left out!
Rule: "Ride for 5 minutes, then pass to the next friend."
Listening Ears
When one person speaks at circle time, we keep quiet and look at them. Every voice deserves to be heard!
Rule: "One person talks, all friends listen."
Rules help us share so every student feels happy and valued!

Lesson 2 of 3
What Makes A Rule Fair?
Put on your detective hat! Today we look at rules and decide: Is this rule fair for everyone, or is it unfair?
Detective Goal
Discover how fair rules treat all friends with respect and give everyone a turn.
Fairness Clues
1
Detective Case #1: The Swing Rule
Case Investigation
The Proposed Rule:
"Only children wearing red sneakers are allowed on the playground swings!"
Is This Rule Fair?
NO! It leaves out friends just because of what shoes they wear today.
How Can We Make It Fair?
Fair Rule: Everyone who wants to swing counts to 30 pushes, then shares!
Fair rules do NOT pick favorites. Fair rules include everyone!
2
Detective Case #2: The Crayon Basket
Case Investigation
Unfair Rule
"One student grabs the whole crayon caddy and hides it on their lap so no one else can color."
Result: Other friends feel sad and cannot do their drawing work.
Fair Rule
"The crayon basket stays in the middle of the table so every friend can reach any color they need."
Result: Everyone creates wonderful art together!
Fair rules make sure everybody has what they need to learn!

The 3 Tests of a Fair Rule
Detective Checklist
1. Is It Safe?
Does the rule protect our bodies and our heads from getting hurt?
Protects Bodies
2. For Everyone?
Does the rule apply to every student, not just one special person?
Includes All Friends
3. Is It Kind?
Does the rule make our classroom a peaceful and caring home?
Builds Kindness
If a rule passes all three tests, it is a FAIR RULE!

Class Agreement
1
How Do We Build A Good Rule?
Our Recipe
Step 1: Notice Problems
What makes us feel unsafe, upset, or left out during our day?
Step 2: Think of a Solution
What rule will help everyone stay safe and have an equal chance?
Step 3: Agree Together
Everyone agrees: "Yes! This rule is fair and helps our whole class!"
When we make rules together, our classroom belongs to all of us!

Our 4 Fair Classroom Promises
Classroom Rules
1. Safe Bodies
We use walking feet and gentle hands everywhere we go.
2. Fair Turns
We share classroom toys and give every friend a turn.
3. Listening Ears
When someone is speaking, we stop, look, and listen.
4. Helping Words
We use kind words and help up friends who need a hand.
Do these 4 rules pass our fairness test? (Safe? For everyone? Kind? YES!)

What Does A Rule Ranger Do?
Everyday Actions
Friendly Reminders
If a friend forgets a rule, a Rule Ranger doesn’t yell or tattletale. Instead, say gently: "Remember our walking feet, friend!"
Problem Solver
If two friends want the same book, a Rule Ranger offers a fair solution: "Let’s read it together side-by-side!"
We help each other succeed every single day!

Massachusetts History and Social Science Framework Alignment
Topic 1: Civics — Classroom Citizenship, Rules, and Fairness. Supporting Question: "What are fair rules and why do we need them?" Students explore why rules are established, what constitutes fairness (equal treatment, safety, respect), and how groups make decisions peacefully.
Big Ideas for 5-Year-Olds
Rules exist to protect bodies, feelings, and shared materials.
Fair does not mean everyone gets everything; it means everyone gets what they need and equal opportunity.

Lesson 1: Safe and Sound (Why Rules Exist)
25-30 Minutes
1. Circle Time Hook (5 min):
Play the "Traffic Jam Game." Invite 4 students to cross a pretend street without traffic lights or rules. It results in a silly collision. Then introduce a stop sign and red/green hand signals. Ask: "How did the traffic rule help everyone stay safe?"
2. Interactive Slide Discussion (10 min):
Use Rules Keep Safe Slides. Guide students through the contrast: No Rules (chaos, hurt feelings, broken toys) vs. Safe Rules (peace, predictability, smiles). Emphasize: Rules are not punishments; they protect our fun!
3. Recommended Read-Aloud:
What If Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick or Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann.
4. Student Practice & Formative Check (10 min):
Students complete the Safe Choices Activity. Circulate and ask: "What rule did you draw? Why does that rule keep your friends safe?" Provide dictation support for writing lines.

Lesson 2: Fair Play Detectives (Testing for Fairness)
25-30 Minutes
Experiential Hook: Give one student the entire bin of colored markers and give the remaining students blank paper with nothing to draw with. Ask: "How does this feel? Is this rule fair?" Guide the class to formulate the fair rule: center supply caddies.
The 3-Point Fairness Test: Teach the hand gestures: (1) Safe (hand over heart), (2) For Everyone (open arms), (3) Kind (gentle smile).
Student Task: Students work through the Fair Detective Worksheet, identifying fair vs unfair rules and illustrating a sharing solution.
