Granular & Large
The black and brown pigments of the hair cortex. Because of their large molecules, they are easier to lift and break down during lightening.
Dominates natural levels 1 (Black) to 5 (Light Brown)
Pheomelanin Warm Pigment
Diffuse & Dense
The red and yellow pigments. These molecules are small, tightly packed, and scattered densely. They are highly resistant and hard to break down.
Remains as underlying warm tones during lifting
Why does dark hair turn red-orange first when lightened? That is pheomelanin revealing itself!

The Overlap Risk
Overlapping aniline derivative dyes onto old chemical relaxers can dissolve cortical bonds entirely, causing catastrophic breakage or "chemical haircuts."
