Objective
Students will identify different family members and their responsibilities through shared reading, discussion, and hands-on sorting.
Time Instructional Steps 5 mins
Welcome & Introduction
Gather students in a circle on the reading rug.
Ask: "Who is in your family?" and list responses.
Explain: "Today we’ll learn about family members and how everyone helps at home."

Show the cover of Big Book of Families and ask for predictions.
Read page by page, pausing to point out family members.
Invite students to shout out or point to who they see in each illustration.

Ask: "What jobs or tasks did each family member do in the story?"
Chart responses (e.g., cooking, cleaning, reading) on anchor chart.
Relate back: "What does your family help you with?"

Match picture cards of family members to pictures of tasks on the mat.

Some families have two parents. Some have one. Some have grandparents, aunts, uncles, or cousins living with them.

They all cook pancakes together on Saturday mornings.

This is Amir’s family. He lives with his grandma and grandpa.
They water the garden and grow bright flowers and juicy tomatoes.

This is Keisha’s family. She lives with her mom, her dad, and her little brother.
After school, they help each other with homework and read bedtime stories.

“Which chore would you most like to do with your family? Why?”
• Allow 2–3 students to share choice and reason.
“What if no one helped—how would that feel?”

Chart one new thing learned about family jobs.
Encourage students to thank someone at home by doing a helpful chore.

Station Guide
Purpose
Reinforce understanding of family members and their responsibilities through a hands-on matching game.
Quick Stats
Time: 5–10 min
Groups: 3–4 students
1. Setup
Divide students into small groups of 3–4.
Hand out one Sorting Mat and a stack of Sort Cards per group.
Explain that cards show people or chores.
2. Sorting
Examine each card and decide who does which task.
Place cards on the matching task picture.
Prompt: "Why does Mom help cook?" or "Who waters plants in your home?"
3. Share
Whole class share: explain one match.
Ask: "Did anyone match differently? Why?"
Reinforce: Every family helps in many ways.

Purpose
Use these questions to deepen thinking during the Sorting Activity . Connect the activity to students’ own lives and keep the conversation flowing.
During Sorting
• “Can you show me how you decided where this card goes? What clues did you notice?”
• “Who in your own family does this chore? Tell us one thing they do.”
• “Did everyone in your group agree? What did you discuss?”
Connections
• “What chores do you help with at home? Which card matches that chore?”
• “How does it feel when someone helps you with a chore?”
• “What might happen if no one helped with that task at home?”
Extension Questions
“Can you think of a chore your family does that isn’t on these cards?”
“If you could choose one chore to do this weekend, which would it be?”

1 Setup
Place the cards in a hat or basket. Explain that students act out a chore without speaking while the rest guess.
2 Playing the Game
Round Structure:
A volunteer draws one card.
Volunteer has 30 seconds to act out the chore silently.
Classmates raise hands to guess.
Switch: Guesser becomes next actor or a new volunteer is picked.
Teacher Prompts:
"Show us how you feed the pet without making any sounds!"
"Think about which family member might do this chore at home."

Team Charades
Divide class into two teams; each correct guess earns a point.

Explain: "Today we’ll talk more about chores, act them out, and draw our own families."
