Student Learning Objectives (SWBAT):
- Identify 4 core computer parts: monitor/screen, keyboard, mouse/touchpad, and tower/CPU.
- Execute 3 input gestures: single-click (select), double-click (open), and click-and-drag.
- Navigate desktop windows: open, minimize, and safely close applications using the "X".
Essential Questions:
"How do human hands tell a computer what to do? Why is the cursor like a digital finger?"
Prior Knowledge: No prior device experience required; builds gross-to-fine motor coordination.
Key Vocabulary & Hardware Anatomy
Monitor / Screen
The display window that shows what the computer brain is thinking and running.
Mouse / Touchpad
The input tool that translates hand movements into on-screen pointer actions.
Keyboard
The input panel with letters, numbers, and commands to send text and instructions.
Cursor / Pointer
The arrow or icon on screen that moves exactly where your hand steers it.
Materials & Teacher Preparation Checklist
Physical & Classroom Materials:
- • 1 computer / laptop per student (or 1:2 peer pairs).
- • Green Dot Stickers: Placed on the left mouse button (or left side of touchpad) to anchor primary clicking finger.
- • Hardware Detective printouts & pencils for wrap-up.
Digital & System Prep:
- • Power on all stations and set screen to clean desktop.
- • Place practice folder or shortcut icon ("Explorer Box") centered on each desktop screen.
- • Verify mouse speed is set to medium/slow in OS settings.

Step 1: The Hardware Hunt Hook (5 Mins) Whole Group Rug/Screens Dark
Gather students on the rug or instruct "Hands on knees, screens to sleep." Introduce the computer as an alien robot that speaks through pictures and listens through physical controls. Point to physical components one by one and have students shout out what each part does.
Teacher Hook Script: "Your mouse is not an animal—it's a magic paintbrush. Wherever your hand slides across the pad, your cursor shadow glides on screen!"
Step 2: The "Green Dot" Finger Grip & Gestures (15 Mins) Teacher Model + Guided Echo
Project your screen. Teach the physical grip: palm resting flat, thumb holding the left flank, pinky/ring finger holding the right flank. The index finger rests exclusively on the Green Dot (Left Click).
1. The Soft Click Quick tap like popping a bubble. Highlights/selects an object without dragging it.
2. Double-Click Beat "Click-click!" like knocking twice on a dollhouse door. Opens an application.
3. Press, Hold & Drag Press down green dot, keep it pressed, glide across pad, release to drop.

Challenge A: Icon Sort
Click and drag 4 misplaced puzzle icons into a folder labeled "Recycle Bin" or "Treasure Chest".
Challenge B: Window Pilot
Double-click the paint or text app. Practice clicking the "-" (minimize), "+" (maximize), and "X" (close window).
Challenge C: Name Stamping
Click inside the blank typing area, type first name using the keyboard, and hit Spacebar.

- Close active windows via red X; 2) Park mouse neatly next to keyboard; 3) Whisper to elbow-partner one hardware part learned today.

Teacher Trouble-Shooting & Common Misconceptions
The "Flying Mouse"
Issue: Students lift the mouse into the air when reaching the mousepad edge.
Fix: Teach the "Skate & Reset": pick it up 1 inch, place it in pad center.
Accidental Right-Clicks
Issue: Gray menu boxes keep popping up everywhere.
Fix: Remind: "Trust the Green Dot! Index finger does all the work today."
The Missing Window
Issue: Student clicked the "-" button and thinks their work is deleted.
Fix: Demonstrate the bottom taskbar / dock: "It's just taking a nap down here."
