ANATOMY OF A DAIRY COW
A Kid-Friendly Look Inside Earth's Super-Grazer!
RUMEN RETIC. OMAS. ABOM.
1. 300° Vision Eyes
Eyes on the sides of her head give a 300° view so wolves or danger can't sneak up while grazing!
2. Tough Dental Pad
Zero top front teeth! A rubbery gum pad pinches tall grass against bottom teeth like scissors.
3. 4-Room Tummy Factory
Rumen, Reticulum, Omasum & Abomasum work together to ferment and break down rough grass fibers.
4. The Milk Udder
Stores warm milk for baby calves. A dairy cow makes 7 to 8 gallons of milk every day!
5. Two-Toed Mud Hooves
Split cloven hooves balance her heavy weight so she doesn't slip and slide in wet pasture mud.
6. Fly-Swatter Tail
A long, muscular switch with a fluffy brush tip whisks away pesky biting flies with a gentle swish!

PASTURE LIFE & GRAZING
How Cows Eat, Drink & Grow
Section 1
100 Pounds of Food Daily: Cows are true herbivores (plant eaters). A single adult cow munches through 100 pounds of pasture grass, sweet clover, alfalfa, and golden dry hay every single day.
Chewing the Cud: Cows graze quickly by wrapping their long, rough tongues around grass and swallowing without chewing thoroughly. Later, while lying down comfortably in the shade, they bring up small portions of food called cud to chew again with flat molars.
A Bathtub of Fresh Water: Digesting dry grass and producing nutritious milk requires massive amounts of hydration. A dairy cow drinks between 30 to 50 gallons of clean water every single day—equal to a bathtub filled to the brim!
Speedy Newborn Calves: A baby cow is called a calf. Newborn calves weigh 60 to 80 pounds at birth. Within just 30 minutes, a healthy calf stands up on its own four wobbly feet and nurses mother's milk!
THE 4-PART STOMACH SYSTEM
How Ruminants Digest Plant Fibers
Section 2
Humans cannot survive on grass because our single stomach cannot break down tough plant cellulose. Cows solve this with four specialized chambers:
Chamber 1: Rumen
The largest room (holds 50 gallons!). Millions of helpful microbes ferment and soften tough grass stems.
Chamber 2: Reticulum
Has a honeycomb wall. It sorts food particles and shapes plant fiber into cud balls to send back up to mouth.
Chamber 3: Omasum
Has many leaf-like tissue folds like book pages. It squeezes and absorbs water and minerals from chewed food.
Chamber 4: Abomasum
The "true stomach." Uses digestive acids and enzymes to absorb essential proteins into bloodstream.
Science Vocabulary: RUMINANT • An animal that digests plant food by chewing cud.

GIFTS FROM THE FARM
How Cows Support Agriculture and Nutrition
Section 3
7 to 8 Gallons of Fresh Milk Daily: A well-cared-for dairy cow produces roughly 128 glasses of fresh milk every single day! Over a full year, one dairy cow yields more than 2,500 gallons of cold, calcium-rich milk.
Delicious Dairy Foods: Fresh milk is processed into kitchen favorites including butter, yogurt, sour cream, and ice cream. Making 1 pound of cheddar cheese takes 10 pounds of fresh whole milk!
Rich Natural Soil Compost: Nothing goes to waste on a sustainable farm! Cow manure contains vital nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Farmers compost manure to enrich field soils so crops of corn, wheat, oats, and vegetables grow tall and healthy.
Durable Leather Goods: Cowhides provide tough, long-lasting leather used to make baseball gloves, sturdy work boots, farm saddles, belts, and sports equipment that withstand years of rugged use.
MEET FAMOUS COW BREEDS
Spotting Common Farm Breeds
Section 4
Holstein-Friesian Dairy
The world-famous black-and-white spotted cow! Known for producing the highest volume of milk of any dairy breed.
Jersey Cow Dairy
Small, gentle cow with a warm fawn-brown coat and big brown eyes. Her milk is famous for rich butterfat used in butter and ice cream.
Hereford Beef
Rust-red body with an unmistakable white face, chest, and belly. Extremely hardy cattle that thrive on open rangeland pastures.
Black Angus Beef
Solid black coat and naturally polled (meaning they are born without horns). Renowned worldwide for high-quality pasture beef.
Fun Fact: No two Holstein cows have the exact same pattern of black spots!

COWS HAVE BEST FRIENDS! Herd Science
Animal scientists at universities discovered that dairy cows form strong personal friendships in their herd! When cows are separated from their favorite pasture buddy, their heart rate spikes and they show clear signs of stress. When reunited, their heart rates return to calm and they gently groom each other!

THE STAIRCASE RIDDLE Body Mechanics
Can a cow walk downstairs? No! A cow can easily walk up stairs because their knee joints bend upward. However, their leg joints and hip angles cannot bend properly to navigate stepping downward! They also boast a super sense of smell that detects odors up to 6 miles away across fields!
