The Golden Rule
1 Light Band + 1 Dark Band = 1 Full Year of Growth!
Each pair of light and dark rings represents one full annual cycle in a tree's life.
Anatomy of a Tree Trunk
Inside-Out View
1. Earlywood (Spring)
Wide, lighter wood. Grows fast as rains and sun return.
2. Latewood (Summer/Fall)
Thin, dark ring. Growth slows down as winter approaches.
3 Steps to Count Age
1
Find the Pith
Locate the tiny dark circle in the very center. Do not count the pith as year one!
2
Count the Dark Rings
Start next to the pith and count each thin, dark ring outward toward the bark.
3
Stop at the Bark
The ring just beneath the living bark was the tree's final growing year!
Pro Counting Tip
Counting only the dark rings is easiest because they are crisp and well-defined lines!
Reading Ring Secrets: What Clues Mean
Trees Keep a Weather Diary
Wide Ring
Plenty of rain, warm sunshine, and ideal growing conditions that year.
Great Growth
Narrow Ring
Drought (lack of rain), severe cold snap, disease, or intense crowding.
Tough Year
Tilted Rings
Tree leaned on a steep hillside or faced strong prevailing winds.
Reaction Wood
Black Scar
Forest fire or insect attack damaged the bark, which later healed over.
Injury Healed
Vocabulary Word
Dendrochronology
[den-dro-kruh-NOL-uh-jee]
From Greek: dendron (tree) + chronos (time) + logos (study). The science of dating past events using tree rings!
Quick Practice Challenge
Look at the sample trunk slice diagram above. Count the dark growth rings from the center out.
How old is the tree in the diagram?
Write Age
years old
💡 Fun fact: You can also date living trees without cutting them down using an increment borer tool! Dendrochronology Reference Card

A
The Pith
The small central core. It was the very first baby shoot of the tree!
⚠️ Never count the pith as ring #1!
B
Earlywood
The light, wide band made in spring. Water and sunshine make cells grow big and fast!
🌱 Fast spring growth
C
Latewood
The dark, narrow line made in late summer and fall. Growth slows down before winter.

3 Steps to Count a Tree's Age
Slide 4
1
Locate the Pith (Center)
Find the center dot. Remember: start counting at the first ring next to it , not the pith itself.
2
Count the Dark Rings Outward
Move your eye in a straight line from center to outside bark. Dark rings are easiest to count!
3
Stop at the Outer Bark
The final ring directly under the bark is the last year the tree grew. Total dark rings = tree's age in years!

Wide Ring
Lots of rain, plenty of warm sunlight, and ideal healthy growing conditions.
Booming Growth!
Narrow Ring
Drought (no rain), severe cold frost, insect outbreak, or intense crowding.
Tough Stress Year!
Black Scar
A forest fire or injury damaged the trunk bark, and new rings grew over the wound.
