Learning Objectives
Students will identify the difference between a mixture (parts stay separate) and a solution (parts dissolve/blend).
Students will describe how heat can change the state of matter in a mixture (liquid vs. solid).
Students will design a candy "recipe" by selecting ingredients with specific physical properties.

1. The Mix-Up (5 min)
WARM-UP
Perform a live demo. Place sand in water and stir. Place sugar in water and stir. Ask: "Which one 'disappeared'? Why?" Introduce Solution (dissolved) vs. Mixture (visible parts).
2. Candy Chronicles (10 min)
WATCH & DISCUSS
Watch the SciShow Kids video. Use the pause points on the slides to discuss:
• 1:40: How does hard corn become sticky syrup?
• 3:08: What other foods change from liquid to solid?
• 5:52: Guess the bug! (Poll the class).
3. The Candy Lab (20 min)
ACTIVITY
Students work in pairs. Distribute the "Candy Creator" worksheet. They must act as Confectioners to design a new candy mixture. Focus on the "Vat" drawing—remind them to show the different parts of their mixture.
4. Recipe Reveal (5 min)
CLOSURE
Have pairs swap papers. Discussion Question: "If you put your mixture in a mold, would it be a liquid or a solid when it cools down? Why?"
