The Mystery of the Carved Turnip
A long time ago across the ocean in Ireland, families did not have bright orange pumpkins. When autumn came, people celebrated the harvest by carving faces into hard white turnips and potatoes ! They placed small burning coals or candles inside the turnips to light up dark country roads at night.
Later, when Irish families moved to America, they discovered big, beautiful orange pumpkins growing across farm fields. Pumpkins were much rounder, bigger, and far easier to scoop out than hard turnips. When placed in a window with a candle, the pumpkins glowed with a warm, friendly golden light. Everyone loved carving pumpkins, and that is how the jack-o'-lantern tradition became famous!
