Teacher Facilitation Guide
Grade 2 • Physical Science
Matter & Its Interactions
Learning Objective
Students will demonstrate and explain how liquids change shape to fill their container while solids maintain a definite shape, regardless of the container.
Materials Needed
- Clear containers (Tall, Flat, Square)
- Water with food coloring
- Solid blocks (wood or plastic)
- Shape Shifters Observation Log
Lesson Roadmap
5 min Warm-up
The Pencil vs. Water Challenge
Hold up a pencil and a cup of water. Ask students to predict: "What happens to the shape of the pencil if I put it in this tall glass? What happens to the shape of the water if I pour it in?"
Key Question: Does the pencil change its shape to fit the cup? Why or why not?
5 min Video
Visualizing Matter
Watch the "Amazing States of Matter" video. Focus specifically on 1:28 to 1:47.
- Point out the visual of water being poured from a pitcher to a glass (1:40).
- Ask: "Is the water the same shape in the pitcher as it is in the glass?"
25 min Activity
Experiment: The Shape of Water
Students rotate through stations or work in groups with 3 different shaped containers.
Part A: The Solid. Students place a block in each container and draw what they see on their log. (Spoiler: It stays a block!)
Part B: The Liquid. Students pour exactly 100ml of colored water into each container and draw the new shape.
10 min Reflect
Scientific Definitions
Lead a discussion to build a class definition for "Liquid".
"A liquid is matter that flows and takes the shape of its container."
Watch Out!
Common Misconception: Students might think that because the shape changed, the amount of water changed.
Tip: Pour the water back into a measuring cup after each container to show it's still exactly 100ml.
Differentiation
- Support: Provide sentence starters for the reflection ("The water changed its shape when...")
- Extension: Ask students to predict what shape the water would take in a star-shaped container or a glove.
Log Answer Key
The Solid Block Column:
Every drawing should show the same square/rectangle shape, sitting at the bottom of the container. It does NOT fill the width of the bowl or the height of the cylinder.
The Colored Water Column:
The drawings should match the container. Tall and thin in the cylinder; wide and flat in the bowl; square-based in the box.
Final Definition:
"A liquid is matter that changes shape to fit its container."

Scientific Definitions
Solid
Matter that is hard and keeps a definite shape.
Liquid
Matter that flows and takes the shape of its container.
The Shape of Water
1
Observe
Look at your three containers. Are they the same shape?
2
The Block
Put your solid block in each container. Does its shape change? Draw it!
3
The Water
Pour 100ml of colored water into each container. Watch it shift! Draw it!
