Unit 11: Plant Life Cycles & Environmental Survival
Grade Level 3rd Grade
Standards
- LS.3.2.2: Plant life cycle stages (seed, germination, seedling, adult).
- LS.3.3.1: Environmental survival conditions (air, light, water).
- LS.3.3.2: Soil properties (sand, silt, clay, humus).
The Experiment
Clover Quest: Students plant white clover seeds. Half the class sets up "Control" plants (optimal light/water), and the other half investigates "Variables" (no light or no water) to observe survival impacts.
1
Day 1: The Clover Kickoff
Focus: Seeds & Germination Setup
Instruction
Introduce the 4 stages of the life cycle. Discuss what a seed needs to "wake up" (germination). Model the seed stage.
Activity
Plant Clover seeds in clear cups. Set up the Sprout Scout Journal. Define Control vs. Variable groups.
2
Day 2: The Survival Equation
Focus: Environmental Conditions (LS.3.3.1)
Instruction
Discuss Light, Air, and Water. Ask: "What happens if a plant is in a drought?" or "What if it's in a dark closet?"
Activity
First observation (look for swelling/cracking seeds). Move Variable plants to dark spots or label them "No Water".
Materials Checklist
White Clover Seeds
Clear Plastic Cups
Potting Soil
Sand/Silt/Clay Samples
Centimeter Rulers
Sprout Scout Journals
3
Day 3: The Dirt on Dirt
Focus: Soil Properties (LS.3.3.2)
Instruction
Introduce Sand, Silt, and Clay. Explain Humus (organic matter). Demonstrate "Water Retention" using three filters.
Activity
Observation #2. Touch/Feel soil samples. Categorize soil types based on particle size and texture in journals.
4
Day 4: Growing Pains
Focus: Life Cycle Modeling
Instruction
Review Life Cycle: Seed → Germination → Seedling → Adult. Discuss why plants *must* reach the adult stage (reproduction).
Activity
Observation #3 (Seedlings should be visible). Students create a physical or digital model of the Clover life cycle.
5
Day 5: Scientific Claims
Focus: CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning)
Instruction
Compare Control group vs. Variable group data. Why did some survive while others struggled?
Activity
Final observations. Completing the CER in the journal. Peer-share of results and conclusions.
Key Discussion Prompts
- "If a seed doesn't get water, is it still alive? How do we know?"
- "Which soil type would be best for a plant during a dry summer? Why?"
- "Why do mature plants produce seeds instead of just living forever?"
Differentiation
- Support: Provide a word bank for life cycle stages and soil properties.
- Extension: Have students predict how *different* seeds (e.g., beans) might grow compared to Clover.
- ELL: Use visual flashcards for Sand, Silt, and Clay particle sizes.

Survival Essentials
Light
Energy source for making food
Water
Essential for structure and transport
Air
Needed for photosynthesis and breathing
"What happens if we take one away?"
Soil Secrets
Sand
Large particles. Water runs through fast.
Silt
Medium particles. Feels like flour.
Clay
Smallest particles. Holds water tight.
Humus
Rich organic matter. Full of nutrients.
The Experiment
Which soil holds water the longest? (Retention)
Sand Silt Clay

Claim
What is the answer to our question?
E
Evidence
What data did you observe or measure?
R
Reasoning
Why does your evidence support your claim?
Our Class Question:
"Does a plant's environment affect its survival and growth?"

Our Mission
"Observe the life cycle of a clover plant and discover what environmental conditions help it survive."

My Observation Group:
Control Group (Ideal Conditions)
Variable Group (Changing One Need)
The Variable (if applicable):
What is different about your plant's environment?
My Prediction:

Scientific Conclusion
Claim
Did your variable affect the plant's growth? What happened?
Evidence
Use your data (measurements/drawings) to prove your claim.
Reasoning
Why did this happen? Think about the survival needs of plants.
