The Heart of Space Exploration
Deep in the heart of Texas, just south of Houston, lies the nerve center for America's human spaceflight program. Originally known as the Manned Spacecraft Center, it was renamed in 1973 in honor of President Lyndon B. Johnson. Since its doors opened in 1961, the Johnson Space Center (JSC) has been the place where the impossible becomes reality.
Where Missions Live
If you've ever heard a movie astronaut say, "Houston, we've had a problem," they were talking to the flight controllers at JSC. Christopher C. Kraft Mission Control Center is where dedicated teams monitor every aspect of a mission, 24 hours a day. From the early Gemini and Apollo missions to the current operations on the International Space Station (ISS), Mission Control provides the "brains" on the ground for the "brawn" in space.
The Astronaut's Backyard
JSC is also where every American astronaut comes to train. Before they ever blast off, they spend hundreds of hours in the Neutral Buoyancy Lab—a massive pool that holds 6.2 million gallons of water. By wearing weighted suits underwater, astronauts can simulate the "weightless" feeling of microgravity. They practice fixing satellite parts or building modules for the ISS in a life-sized underwater replica of the station.
The Legacy of Giants
Visitors to JSC can see one of only three remaining Saturn V rockets. This massive machine—taller than a 36-story building—was the powerhouse that took humans to the Moon. Today, the center is looking forward, working on the Orion spacecraft and the Artemis missions, which aim to put the first woman and the next man on the lunar surface before heading to Mars.

"They look like they're in slow motion," Leo whispered.
Dr. Aris, a flight engineer with a silver NASA pin, nodded. "That's the magic of the NBL. We use buoyancy to cancel out gravity. If an astronaut weighs 160 pounds and her suit weighs another 300 pounds, we add lead weights and foam until the water pushes up with exactly 460 pounds of force. What’s the net weight then, Leo?"

Inside the Christopher C. Kraft Mission Control Center, the atmosphere was electric. Glowing screens displayed complex telemetry data from a probe currently orbiting Mars.
"The probe’s computer is stuck in a loop," the Flight Director shouted. "We need to send a reboot command, but we have to time it perfectly. The probe is exactly 252 million kilometers away right now."
Leo watched as the team scrambled. Dr. Aris turned to a whiteboard. "Leo, radio waves travel at the speed of light—roughly 300,000 kilometers per second. If we send the signal now, how long until the probe receives it?"
