Mission Objectives
Students will act as "Matter Detectives" to crack the mystery of physical states. By examining real-world clues, they will learn to distinguish solids, liquids, and gases by their shape and volume properties, and chart how temperature shifts cause changes of state.

Begin the case! Place a wet sponge swipe on the chalkboard or pour 5ml of water onto a warm black plate. Challenge the students: "We have water on the run! Where did it go? Is it still in this room?" Gather detective hypotheses. Introduce the three states of matter.

Phase 2: Gathering the Physical Evidence
Hand out wooden blocks, water cups, and syringes filled with air. Instruct student sleuths to complete **Section 1 of the Evidence Log**. They will try to squash the block, pour water into different cups, and compress air to discover rules of definite/indefinite shape and volume.

Phase 3: The Heat-Energy Culprit (Changes of State)
Use the **Sleuth Slide Deck** to explain physical transformations. Demonstrate **evaporation** by boiling water in a kettle. Capture the steam on a cold glass or metal sheet to model **condensation** right in front of their eyes. Explain that molecules move faster and push apart as heat is added, and slow down and pack tight when heat is lost.

Phase 4: Clue Connection & Modeling
Have students work in groups to complete **Section 2 of the Evidence Log**. They will sketch state change arrows and label the roles of heat (Adding Heat vs. Removing Heat). Walk around asking critical-thinking questions to guide struggling groups.
55 - 60 Min
Phase 5: Case Closed File
Collect individual data by distributing the **Case Closed Exit Ticket**. Have students complete it independently to show mastery of properties and change-of-state vocabulary.

Have them physically act out water molecules: standing frozen tight (solid), wiggling close together (liquid), and running around waving arms (gas). Use word banks with matching pictures.
Expert Sleuths (High Achievers):
Have them research **sublimation** (dry ice turning straight from solid to gas) or explain how sweat cooling our bodies relates to the thermal energy of evaporation.
