4 Boss Battle: Imposter Alert! (Error Analysis)

40 pts (13-14 pts each)

A rookie chemist made errors on their lab exam. Identify each blunder, explain why the nomenclature rule was broken, and write the corrected name or formula.

Case A: The student named CaCl₂ as "Calcium dichloride".

Identify the rule violation:

Correct IUPAC Name:

Case B: The student wrote the formula for Iron(III) chloride as Fe₃Cl.

Identify the rule violation (what does the Roman numeral mean?):

Correct Chemical Formula:

Case C: The student named the molecular compound P₂O₃ as "Phosphorus oxide".

Identify the rule violation:

Correct IUPAC Name:

Tally: R1: ___/40 R2: ___/30 R3: ___/40 R4: ___/40

Bond Clash: Player Sheet Key

Rounds 2, 3, & Boss Battle

2 Round 2: Formulas → Names Key

1. Al₂O₃Ionic

Aluminum oxide

Al has fixed +3 charge; NO Roman numeral or prefix.

2. SO₃Molecular

Sulfur trioxide

2 nonmetals; prefix tri- on second element.

3. Cu(NO₃)₂Ionic

Copper(II) nitrate

Two NO₃⁻ (-2 total) requires Cu²⁺; Roman numeral (II).

4. N₂O₅Molecular

Dinitrogen pentoxide

2 nonmetals; di- (2) and pentoxide (penta- drops 'a').

5. FeSO₄Ionic

Iron(II) sulfate

SO₄²⁻ (-2) balances 1 Fe²⁺ (+2); Roman numeral (II).

6. CF₄Molecular

Carbon tetrafluoride

2 nonmetals; single carbon, tetra- on fluorine.

3 Round 3: Names → Formulas Key

1. Silicon tetrachlorideMolecular

Formula: SiCl₄

Si (1) + tetra- Cl (4).

2. Sodium phosphateIonic

Formula: Na₃PO₄

Three Na⁺ (+3) balance one PO₄³⁻ (-3).

3. Iron(II) phosphateIonic

Formula: Fe₃(PO₄)₂

3 Fe²⁺ (+6) balance 2 PO₄³⁻ (-6); parentheses mandatory.

4. Dichlorine heptoxideMolecular

Formula: Cl₂O₇

di- Cl (2) + hepta- O (7).

5. Potassium carbonateIonic

Formula: K₂CO₃

Two K⁺ (+2) balance one CO₃²⁻ (-2).

6. Tetranitrogen tetrasulfideMolecular

Formula: N₄S₄

tetra- N (4) + tetra- S (4). Do not reduce molecular!

4 Round 4: Imposter Alert Error Diagnoses

Case A: CaCl₂

Violation: Greek prefix "di-" was used on an ionic compound. Ca is an alkaline earth metal.

Correct: Calcium chloride

Case B: Fe₃Cl

Violation: The Roman numeral (III) signifies the cation charge (Fe³⁺), not the number of iron atoms!

Correct: FeCl₃

Case C: P₂O₃

Violation: Both P and O are nonmetals (covalent bond). Greek prefixes are mandatory to show atom counts.

Correct: Diphosphorus trioxide

Teacher Facilitation Alert: Watch for students trying to reduce molecular formulas (e.g. reducing N₄S₄ to NS or N₂O₄ to NO₂). Remind them that unlike ionic empirical formulas, molecular formulas represent the actual physical molecule and must NEVER be simplified. Also remind students that Roman numerals indicate charge, not subscript quantity.
