Day 1: Liquid Density & Mesmerizing Mixtures
Objective
Students will observe the interaction between water and oil, understand that some liquids don't mix, and explore how different objects sink or float within these layers.
Duration

Clear plastic bottles (Voss style works best)
Water (room temperature)
Baby oil or vegetable oil
Food coloring
Glitter (fine and chunky)
Plastic beads and sequins
Strong glue (hot glue or super glue for lids)

Activity Steps

The Foundation
Fill the bottle halfway with water. Add 2-3 drops of food coloring. Swirl to mix. Ask students: "What happened to the water?"

The Magic Layer
Slowly pour baby oil into the bottle using a funnel until it is nearly full. Stop and observe the bubbles rising and the layers forming. Ask: "Why don't they mix?"

Floating Treasures
Add glitter, beads, and sequins. Watch how they pass through the oil and settle in the water layer (or float on the oil). Discuss weight and density.

Sealing the Deal
Teacher Task: Apply glue to the inside of the bottle cap and screw it on tightly. Allow to dry before letting students shake them.

Let students touch the dry cornstarch. How does it feel? (Soft, silky, squeaky). Discuss how it is a solid.

The Perfect Ratio
Mix 2 parts cornstarch to 1 part water. Add food coloring to the water first for a marble effect. Stir slowly—it gets harder the faster you stir!

The Squeeze Test
Have students grab a handful and squeeze hard (it becomes a solid ball). Then, tell them to open their hand (it melts into a liquid). Ask: "What happened?"

Rescue Mission

Cleanup Tip
NEVER pour Oobleck down the sink—it will clog the pipes! Let it dry and throw it in the trash, or dilute it heavily in a large bucket outside first.

Day 3: Texture Comparison & Creative Molding
Objective
Students will compare and contrast two different sculpting materials (Playdough and Kinetic Sand) to understand how different textures affect molding and movement.

Preparation
Homemade Playdough
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tbsp cream of tartar
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1.5 cups boiling water
Food coloring
Mix dry, add oil/color to water, combine and knead until smooth.
Kinetic Sand
Store-bought Kinetic Sand (recommended)
Alternative: 5 cups clean sand + 1 cup cornstarch + 1/2 cup dish soap/water mix
