What Do Bones Do? The Body Frame
Support & Shape
Think About It!
Without Bones, We Would Be Jellyfish!
Just like the wooden frame holds up a house, your skeleton holds you tall and gives your body its shape.
Bones are hard, light, and alive — they grow as you grow!
Standing Tall
Your spine (backbone) lets you twist, bend, and stand proudly upright.
206 Teammates
Adults have 206 bones working together every single second of the day.
Quick Touch: Gently tap your kneecap and elbow. Feel how solid they are? Super Strong!
Bone Armor: Protecting Delicate Organs
Safety Shields
The Skull
Brain Helmet
A rounded dome made of fused bones that protects your brain from bumps.
Shields: Brain & Sensory Organs
The Ribcage
Heart & Lung Cage
Curved bone bars wrap around your chest to guard your beating heart and breathing lungs.
Shields: Heart & Lungs
The Spine
Nerve Highway
Stack of small ring bones that shields your spinal cord so messages reach your body.
Shields: Spinal Cord Cable
Bones act like built-in armor helmets and cages inside you!
How Muscles Move Us: The Big Secret!
Muscles PULL!
Golden Rule of Muscles
Muscles Only Pull.
They Never Push!
Muscles are attached to bones by stretchy cords called tendons . When a muscle gets tighter and shorter, it pulls on the bone like a tug-of-war rope!
1
Contract (Tighten)
The muscle bunches up, gets thicker, and pulls the bone upward.
2
Relax (Loosen)
The muscle softens and gets longer so another muscle can pull back.
3
Over 600 Muscles
You use 43 muscles just to frown, and 17 muscles to smile!
Try it: Bend your arm and feel your bicep bunch up like a little mountain! That is contraction!
Squad Check: What Did We Learn?
Turn & Talk
Question 1
Why do humans need bones to stand?
What would happen if your skeleton vanished right now?
Hint: Think of a tent without poles!
Question 2
Which bone protects your beating heart?
Why are those bones shaped like curved bars?
Hint: Touch your chest gently!
Question 3
Do muscles push or pull on bones?
Show your partner how a muscle tightens when it pulls.
Hint: Remember the golden rule!

Lesson 1: Skeleton Squad
Instructional Overview & Lesson Pacing
Core Concepts: 206 bones, rigid framework, organ shielding, and muscular pull contraction.
Learning Objectives
Identify the human skeleton as a strong structural framework that supports upright posture.
Explain how specific bones (skull, ribcage, spine) guard vital soft organs.
Demonstrate that muscles cause movement by pulling on bones, never pushing.
Standards & Success Criteria
NGSS Alignment: 2-LS4-1 & Structure/Function crosscutting concept.
Success Criterion: Students can name at least two protective bones and demonstrate muscle contraction on their own arm.
Recommended 45-Minute Instructional Pacing
Phase Time Teacher & Student Actions

Common 2nd Grade Misconceptions
Misconception: "Muscles push your bones open when you straighten your arm."
Correction: Muscles NEVER push. When you straighten your arm, a different muscle in the back of your arm (the triceps) pulls it open!
Misconception: "Bones are dry, dead white rocks inside us."
Correction: Bones are living tissue! They have blood vessels, nerves, and bone marrow producing blood cells, and they grow as children grow.

What is a Joint? Where Bones Meet!
Connection Points
Bending Places
Imagine If Your Leg Was One Long Solid Bone...
You couldn't sit in a chair, walk up stairs, or ride a bicycle! A joint is the exact place where two or more bones meet so your body can bend.
Bones are hard, but joints give you flexibility!
Cushion Cartilage
Slippery cartilage caps each bone end so bones glide without grinding.
Strong Ligaments
Tough straps connect bone-to-bone like super-strong rubber bands.
Tiny Joints Everywhere
Your hand alone has over 25 joints so you can grip pencils and wave!
Wiggle your fingers: You are watching dozens of joints work right now! Super Smooth!
Two Main Joint Types in Your Body
Hinge vs Ball-and-Socket
Opens & Closes
The Hinge Joint
Works just like a door hinge! Moves back and forth in one direction .
Where is it in your body?
• Elbows: bending your arm up & down
• Knees: bending your leg to run or jump
Try it: Open and close your elbow like a classroom door!
All Directions
The Ball-and-Socket
A round bone ball fits into a bowl socket! Can rotate and swing in circles .
Where is it in your body?
• Shoulders: windmill swimming arm circles
• Hips: kicking legs forward, back & sideways
Try it: Spin your arm in a big circle like a windmill!
Hinges swing back and forth. Ball-and-sockets swivel all around! Two Super Designs!
Muscle Tag-Teams: The Biceps & Triceps Duo
Teamwork in Action
Move 1: Bending Arm Up
Bicep Pulls! Tricep Relaxes!
The front muscle (bicep ) tightens and pulls the forearm bone UP toward your chest. The back muscle relaxes.

Instructional Overview & Station Setup
Core Concepts: Joints as pivot points, hinge vs. ball-and-socket motion, and agonist/antagonist muscle pairs.
Learning Objectives
Define a joint as the place where two or more bones meet.
Contrast hinge joints (back-and-forth) with ball-and-socket joints (circular rotation).
Explain why muscles must work in opposing pairs (biceps & triceps) to bend and extend limbs.
Standards & Success Criteria
NGSS Alignment: 2-PS1-2, 2-LS4-1 & Systems and System Models.
Success Criterion: Students accurately classify elbow and shoulder movements and describe the flex/relax cycle of arm muscles.

Facilitation Notes & Worksheet Answer Key
Teacher prompts, misconceptions, answers, and accessibility supports.
Common 2nd Grade Misconceptions
Misconception: "The elbow can circle around just like the shoulder."
Correction: What looks like an elbow circle is actually the shoulder rotating the entire arm! If you hold your upper arm locked still, your elbow can only swing open and shut.
Misconception: "One single muscle bends and straightens my arm."
Correction: Because muscles can only pull, you need one muscle to pull it shut (bicep) and a second muscle on the opposite side to pull it open (tricep).
