Day 1: The Lab Technicians

Activity: Pipette-Free Pipetting
Students simulate lab testing using markers and water. They "swab" a paper "patient sample" and see how colors spread to identify a "pathogen" based on a color key.

Activity: Medical Detective Case Final
Students solve a final mystery case using the skills from Days 1-4. They must fill out a lab report and enter the data into a "paper tablet" database.

The pathway that creates a "picture" of health at a single point in time to identify a condition.
Health Informatics
The pathway focused on managing patient data, records, and information security systems.
Medical Clues
Pathogen
A bacterium, virus, or other tiny microorganism that can cause a disease.

Activity Guide: Day 1 - Pathogen Analysis
Activity Vocabulary
Chromatography: Separating a mixture by passing it through a medium (like paper).
Pathogen: A germ (virus or bacteria) that causes disease.
Solvent: The liquid (water) used to dissolve the ink and help it travel.
MLT: Medical Lab Technician; the professional who runs these tests.
Teacher Prep (10 Minutes)
Prepare the "Patient Samples" before class. Use standard Washable Markers on printer paper strips (approx 2" x 6").
Bacterial Sample
Draw a solid 1/4" dot of Red marker in the center. Label "Sample A".
Viral Sample
Draw a solid 1/4" dot of Blue marker in the center. Label "Sample B".

Preparation
Fill a small cup with 1/2 inch of water. Tape your sample strip to a pencil so the bottom edge just touches the water level.

The Reaction
As water climbs the paper (capillary action), it will hit the marker dot. Let it run for 3-5 minutes until the color spreads significantly.

Data Entry
Remove the strip and place it on a paper towel. Record the final color in your Case File. Does it match Red (Bacterial), Blue (Viral), or Yellow (Healthy)?
Scientific Why
Ink is often made of multiple colors. As water travels, lighter molecules move faster and farther than heavier ones. This "separates" the mixture so we can see what's inside.
Career Link
MLTs use chromatography to detect drugs, toxins, or specific proteins in patient samples. Accurate observation is the difference between a right and wrong diagnosis.
4th Grade Modification
Use coffee filters instead of printer paper. The color spreads into a "flower" shape much faster. Instead of measuring water, let them use a spray bottle to "mist" the marker dot and watch the colors bloom.
