Part 1: Touch-and-Count Routine (4 Min)
Say: "Hold up both hands! Count three fingers on one hand: 1, 2, 3! Now count three fingers on the other hand: 4, 5, 6! Put them together: Six legs! An insect ALWAYS has exactly six legs. Let's tap the picture dots together: One... two... three... four... five... six!"
Part 2: Where Do They Attach? (3 Min)
Say: "Look closely at the middle section—our blue friend, the Thorax ! Do the legs grow out of the insect's head? No! Do they grow out of the tummy? No! Every single leg is locked onto the thorax!"
Part 3: The Spider Trap! (3 Min)
Say: "Look at this creepy crawler—a spider! Count its legs with me: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, EIGHT! Eight legs! Is a spider an insect? Thumbs down! Spiders have 8 legs, so they are NOT insects!"
Tactile Sensory Tip (Pipe Cleaners / Sticks)
Give the student 6 pipe cleaners or toothpicks. Guide them to stick 3 into the left side of a playdough thorax and 3 into the right side. Add 2 tiny pipe cleaners to the head for antennae.
