MANDATORY WORKSHOP REGULATION RACS lab rules
Students do not change blades or use damaged, cracked, or dull tools under any circumstances. If a tool sticks, binds, or exhibits blade wobble, immediately tag it "OUT OF SERVICE" and report to the instructor.
1. Before Cutting
- Goggles on: School safety goggles seated tightly.
- Glove fit checked: Ergodyne gloves snug on working hand.
- Inspect blade & lock: Blade sharp, unchipped; lock works.
- Clear the table: Flat, stable bench surface with no debris.
- Confirm PVC only: Never cut conduit, metal, wood, or wire.
- Measure & mark: Full square circumference line marked.
- Partner checks mark: Peer verifies length before jaw seats.
2. Under Cutting
- Place pipe fully in jaw: Seat pipe flush against curved cradle.
- Keep fingers outside path: Hands well clear of cutting path.
- Pipe supported & level: Prevent bending, torque, or sag.
- Point blade away: Tool oriented away from peers and body.
- Squeeze ratchet slowly: Gradual clicks; do not force blade.
- Stop if pipe shifts/cracks: Stop immediately if tool jams.
- Never force or throw: Two hands max; set tool down gently.
3. After Cutting
- Lock cutter closed: Engage mechanical safety latch right away.
- Deburr & inspect ends: Scuff with 3M sandpaper to remove sharp burrs.
- Label the part: Write length, team ID, and orientation in pencil.
- Return cutter & scraps: Return tool to shadow board; scrap to bin.
Quality Metric: Cuts must be 90° square within 1/16" to ensure secure solvent welding into fittings.
