What is a Life Cycle?
Every living thing on Earth goes through a series of changes from the time it is born until it is fully grown. This circle of life is called a life cycle. A bunny grows through five special stages!
The 5 Stages of a Bunny

Stage 1: A New Litter
Baby rabbits are born together in a group called a litter.

Stage 2: Newborn Kits
Newborn rabbits are called kits (or kids). They have no fur!

A young kit starts to grow some soft fur on its body.

They have all their fur and begin to leave the nest.

By one year old, that rabbit is a full-grown adult.
The Story of a Bunny
Every bunny's story begins in a special home called a nest. When a mother rabbit has babies, she has a whole group at once called a litter. This group can have between two and twelve siblings! They stay huddled together for warmth in a cozy hole lined with dry grass and their mother's soft fur. This keeps them safe and warm while they are very small and helpless.
At the very start, these babies are called newborn kits. Sometimes people even call them kids! They look very different from grown-up rabbits. They are born with no fur at all, and their skin is a bright pink color. Their eyes and ears are tightly closed, so they cannot see or hear anything yet. They spend all their time sleeping and drinking their mother’s milk to grow strong.
After about one week, the young kit stage begins. This is an exciting time for the babies! The tiny bunnies start to grow some soft fur that looks like little peach fuzz. Their ears begin to stand up, and their eyes finally pop open for the first time. They start to crawl around the nest and get very curious about what is outside their cozy underground home.
As another week passes, they become older kits. By now, they have all their fur to keep them warm. They are strong enough to hop out of the nest for the first time! They start to nibble on green grass and clover. They learn how to use their long ears to listen for danger and how to wiggle their little noses to smell yummy snacks in the garden or the field.
The final part of the journey takes a bit longer. The bunny grows bigger and faster every single day. By the time one year has passed, that rabbit is a full-grown adult. Adult rabbits are experts at hopping, hiding, and finding the best plants to eat. They are now big enough to start their own families and have a litter of kits of their own one day soon!
