Phase 1: The Mystery Glow Hook (8 min) Engage & Question
Hook Setup: Dim classroom lights slightly. Hold up a small gray ball or gray cardboard rock in the dark. Ask: "Can you see this rock clearly right now?" (No, it's dim/dark). Then, shine a flashlight beam onto the ball. "What happened? Did the rock suddenly turn into a lightbulb?"
Suggested Teacher Talk: "Look at this gray rock in my hand. When I turn on my flashlight, the rock looks bright! But did the rock turn on like a lamp? No! The light is coming from my flashlight and bouncing into your eyes. Today, we are Space Detectives solving a giant sky mystery: Is the Moon a giant nightlight, or is it doing the very same trick as this rock?"
