Many people believe every giant creature from the prehistoric era was a dinosaur, but scientists classify dinosaurs very carefully. First, true dinosaurs were strictly land-dwelling reptiles. Flying pterosaurs and ocean-swimming plesiosaurs belonged to different reptile groups. Second, dinosaurs had a unique upright skeleton. Their legs grew directly underneath their hips, walking tall like mammals and birds rather than sprawling sideways like lizards. Finally, all non-avian dinosaurs laid eggs on land and became extinct approximately 66 million years ago. These special features made dinosaurs one of Earth’s most successful animal groups.
