Frame Your Biological Driving Question
The Funnel Strategy
A literature review is not a summary of an animal or disease. Investigate a specific biological mechanism, debate, or therapeutic challenge.
Too Broad
"Cancer treatments" or "How does CRISPR work?"
Problem: Produces surface-level encyclopedic facts.
Too Narrow / Simple
"What percent of tumors carry TP53 mutations?"
Problem: Answerable in one number; no room for synthesis.
Ideal Research Question
"How do CAR-T therapies overcome immunosuppression in solid tumors?"
Success: Explores cellular mechanisms, barriers, and trial data.

Evidence Hierarchy
Where to Search
- PubMed & Google Scholar: Peer-reviewed articles and clinical reviews.
- Government Agencies: NIH, CDC, WHO, and USDA research databases.
- Review Papers: Articles marked "Review" summarize dozens of studies!
The STEM Credibility Filter
- Recency: Published within the last 5 years (unless foundational).
- Author Credentials: University faculty, research institutes, or MDs/PhDs.
- Red Flag: Sponsored commercial blogs or uncredited claims.

Synthesize Using the Matrix Method

Do not summarize Source 1, then Source 2. Organize your notes by sub-themes so your sources dialogue with each other.

Absorbing the mechanism and writing in your own voice:
