Power Patrol Presentation POWER PATROL
Tracking Our Energy & Saving the Planet
Morning Energy Blast
Think about your routine from the moment you wake up until you arrive at school.
How do you use energy?
• Turning on lights
• Cooking breakfast
• Charging devices
• Heating water for a shower
"We use energy in ways we don't even notice!"
Your Carbon Footprint
The total amount of greenhouse gases (like CO₂) produced by our daily actions.
"Our energy habits leave a mark on the Earth. The bigger the mark, the more the Earth warms up."

Focus on the section: Conservation & Personal Action
Pause & Reflect
Actions in the Video:
Turning off lights
Energy-efficient appliances
Insulating homes properly
Can you think of three more actions?
Home Energy Audit
You are going to become an Eco-Detective.
Use your checklist to investigate energy use in your home. Look for hidden "energy vampires" and habits that could be improved!
Your Task:
1 Check every room for the items on your list.
2 Mark if it's "Eco-Friendly" or needs "Action".
3 Bring it back to class tomorrow.
Personal Pledge
"I will make a difference by changing my habits."
On your worksheet, draft three specific changes you will commit to making starting today.
Be Specific
Be Realistic
Be Bold
Share & Discuss
Turn to a Partner:
1
Share your top pledge. Why did you choose it?
2
Which change do you think will be the hardest to stick to? Why?

Detective's Notes
What was the biggest "energy vampire" you found in your home? Explain what it was and why it's a problem.
DID YOU KNOW? "Phantom load" can account for 10% of your energy bill!

After investigating my energy habits, I recognize that small actions can lead to a big impact. By signing this document, I commit to the following three changes to reduce my carbon footprint.
1 My First Commitment:
Example: "I will unplug my phone charger every morning after I finish using it."
2 My Second Commitment:
Example: "I will switch off the TV and gaming console at the wall before going to bed."
3 My Third Commitment:
Example: "I will take 5-minute showers to save energy used for heating water."

Power Patrol Lesson Guide Power Patrol
Lesson Facilitation Guide
Grade 6 Environmental Science
Duration: 45-50 Minutes
Learning Objective
Students will identify personal habits that contribute to their carbon footprint and propose three specific lifestyle changes to reduce energy consumption through a home audit and personal pledge.
Materials Needed
• Power Patrol Presentation
• Energy Audit Checklist (1/student)
• Personal Pledge Worksheet (1/student)
• Internet access for video
Lesson Procedure
05 min
Warm-up: Morning Energy Blast
Facilitate a brainstorm: "How do we use energy from the moment we wake up until we go to school?" List student responses on the board. Introduce the concept of a Carbon Footprint .
10 min
Video Analysis: Conservation
Watch Renewable Energy and Climate Change (Segment: 2:06-2:35).
Key Action Items: Turning off lights, energy-efficient appliances, insulation.
Pause at 2:18: Ask students to name the three actions shown and brainstorm three more (e.g., shorter showers, unplugging chargers, air-drying clothes).
20 min
Activity: Audit & Pledge
The Audit: Distribute the Checklist. Review categories. Students should briefly look around the classroom first as a "practice audit" before taking it home.
The Pledge: Students use the "Needs Action" items from their mental home-scan or the classroom practice to draft their Personal Pledge. Emphasize making pledges SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).
10 min
Closure: Partner Reflection
Students share their top pledge with a partner. Discuss: "Which change will be the hardest to stick to?" Facilitate a whole-class share-out of the "hardest" challenges and brainstorm solutions together.
Teaching Tips
• Avoid Guilt: Frame energy conservation as a collective mission rather than personal failure. Some factors (like home insulation) are out of a child's control.
• Energy Vampires: Explain that "standby power" (clocks on microwaves, tiny red lights on TVs) still uses energy.
Discussion Starters
• "Why might it be hard for some families to use energy-efficient appliances?" (Cost, renting vs. owning).
• "How does saving energy at home help animals in the ocean?" (Link CO2 to warming and coral bleaching).
