KINETIC MOTION LAB
Concept: Mechanical Kinetic Energy • Sports & Physics Focus
Physics Lab
Duration: 30-40 Mins
Lesson Goal
The student will observe, describe, and physically explore kinetic energy (motion) by testing real-world mechanical movements: rolling, jumping, running, and sliding .
Respectful Support
Keep the tone mature, styling like a real middle-school science lab. Use technical terms like kinetic, friction, and velocity while keeping physical response demands (writing/motor) highly modified.
1
Warm-Up: Energy Generation (5 Mins)
Have the student rub their hands together as fast as they can. Ask: "What do you feel?" Explain that mechanical friction generates heat energy. Next, run in place or do high-knees to feel their heartbeat rise. Define this as Kinetic Energy .
2
Tactile Physics Lab (15 Mins)
Use the Kinetic Lab Guide . Complete three sleek, age-appropriate science trials:
Roll Trial: Measure how far a sports ball or wheel rolls down a textbook ramp.
Slide Trial: Compare sliding a friction-heavy object (eraser) vs. a low-friction plastic puck.
Launch Trial: Perform vertical jumps and horizontal leaps to feel physical force transfer.
3
Data Cards & Sorting (10 Mins)
Use the Kinetic Tech Cards . Have the student trace the professional terms (ROLL, SLIDE, RUN, JUMP). Guide them to complete the high-interest sports-themed matching and sorting activities in their Worksheet Bundle .
4
Lab Debrief (5 Mins)
Administer the Lab Exit Ticket . The student traces the mature vocabulary term "KINETIC" and identifies high-interest kinetic energy examples (stunt car vs. parked car). Maintain high standards of scientific vocabulary.
Lab Modification & Respectful Engagement
• Vocabulary Elevation: Always say "Kinetic Energy" instead of "Go Power" to build dignity and scientific literacy.
• Motor Accommodations: If cutting is difficult, pre-cut the sorting icons so the student can focus on categorizing objects (e.g., skateboards vs. snowboards).
• Interactive Choices: Use the Tech Cards as non-verbal choice boards for immediate feedback during experiments.
