Paws & Patterns Facilitation Guide
Navigating breed data to identify trait patterns and constructing scientific explanations.
Lesson Focus & Objective
Students explore physical and behavioral traits across eight distinct dog breed profile cards. Partners analyze environment, historical purpose, and physical characteristics to identify strong patterns (e.g., cold-climate dogs having thick double coats). Students then synthesize their findings into a Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) scientific explanation.

Engage: The Curious Case of Canines
Project Slide 2. Show pictures of radically different dogs (Chihuahua vs. Siberian Husky). Pose the driving question: "Why do different dog breeds have such different traits, and how do those traits match where they live or what they do?" Activate prior knowledge about dog characteristics.

Explore: Partner Breed Card Sort
Group students in pairs. Hand out cut-out Dog Breed Cards . Students complete the Data Tracker on the Student Handout. Direct them to highlight physical traits matching the breed's home environment or job (e.g., thick coats for cold climates, webbed feet for swimming, floppy ears for tracking scents).

Synthesize: Co-Constructing CER Explanations
Gather students together. Guide them to select a prominent pattern (e.g., "Dogs that live in freezing climates have thick, double coats of fur"). Model the CER writing process using the sentence stems. Circulate and support struggling writers with visual prompts on Slide 5.

Evaluate: Exit Ticket and Reflection
Administer the Exit Ticket individually. Use this to gauge each student's independent ability to identify a trait pattern and explain its function. Grade using the 3-point rubric on the back.

Guided Questioning Framework
To Spark Card Exploration:
"What physical feature stands out to you on this breed's card? Why do you think it looks like that?"
"Look at the breed's home region. Is it hot, wet, or snowy? What traits might help them survive there?"
To Scaffold CER Writing:
"Can you find two different breeds that both have long, waterproof fur? Where did both of those breeds originate?"
"What is your evidence? Which cards prove that your claim is true for more than just one dog?"
Common Misconceptions Alert
Misconception 1: Dogs chose or grew these traits during their lifetimes to adapt.
Correction: Emphasize that these traits were bred and selected over many generations because they were helpful, not that individual dogs altered their own fur or paws on command.
Misconception 2: All traits are useful for survival in nature.
Correction: Remind students that humans bred many dog traits for specific domestic jobs (like retrieving ducks or herding sheep), which is different from wolves adapting purely to wild environments.

• Focus on just 1 specific trait (e.g., ear size or coat length) across 4 cards rather than analyzing all 8 cards.
• Use the provided color-coded sentence frame strips to build the CER orally before writing.
Extensions / Gifted Learners
• Challenge students to predict traits for a fictional "Desert Dingo" breed card, explaining their trait choices based on extreme heat.
• Have students research a breed not listed in the card pack and present its traits to their partner.
