Exemplary Definition: The ability or capacity to do work and fuel vital life processes in organisms (such as cell division, active transport, and movement).
Acceptable: "Power to do work", "cellular fuel", "ATP".
Watch Out: Energy is not physical matter; cells transform it, not create it.
2 Glucose (\(C_6H_{12}O_6\))
Core Criteria
Exemplary Definition: A simple six-carbon sugar (monosaccharide) synthesized by autotrophs during photosynthesis and broken down by cells in cellular respiration to generate usable energy.
Acceptable: "Simple sugar", "chemical food for cells", "blood sugar".
Watch Out: Students may think only plants have glucose, or confuse it with table sugar (sucrose).
3 Organ (Cell → Tissue → Organ)
Core Criteria
Exemplary Definition: A specialized anatomical structure composed of two or more different tissue types working cooperatively to carry out a specific complex function in an organism.
Acceptable: Group of tissues with a specific job (e.g., heart, stomach, plant leaf).
Watch Out: Must specify multiple tissues; it is larger than a single cell or single tissue.
4 Multicellular (Organization Level)
Core Criteria
Exemplary Definition: An organism consisting of many specialized cells organized into tissues and organs, where individual cells rely on the collective system to survive.
Acceptable: "Made of many cells", "complex organism like plants and animals".
Watch Out: Do not confuse with colonies of single cells; cells must show differentiation.

Teacher Pacing Tip: While circulating, check that students do not define "organ" merely as "a body part" or "glucose" as just "sugar." Have a student who connected all four terms share their sentence on the document camera during the debrief.
