Microscopic Cells & Anton van Leeuwenhoek
• All living things (including you!) are made of tiny building blocks called cells.
• Cells are microscopic—so small they can only be seen through a powerful microscope!
• Anton van Leeuwenhoek lived hundreds of years ago in a Dutch village. His curiosity and lens-making skills led him to observe and name microscopic cells and tiny one-celled bacteria!
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Father of Microbiology discovered microscopic life!
How Your Body Is Built: From Cells to Systems
Every part of you works in a team, from smallest to biggest:
Step 1
1. Cells
🔬
The smallest living building block of all life.
Step 2
2. Tissues
🧬
Groups of similar cells joined to do one job.
Step 3
3. Organs
🫀
Tissues grouped to do special jobs (heart, brain, stomach).
Step 4
4. Systems
🧍
Teams of organs working together to keep you alive!
The Six Super Systems in the Human Body
🦴 Skeletal System
206 bones give your body shape and protect inner organs.
💪 Muscular System
Works with bones to help you walk, jump, and smile.
❤️ Circulatory System
Heart and blood vessels pump oxygen and nutrients all over.
🧠 Nervous System
Brain and nerves send messages so you can think and feel.
🥗 Digestive System
Breaks down food to provide fuel and energy for life.
💧 Excretory System
Filters liquid waste and balances water to keep body clean.

How We Nourish Our Bodies • Page 2 of 3
Core Systems
The Great Digestive Journey (From Mouth to Waste)
1
Mouth & Saliva: Teeth chew food into small pieces. Saliva (spit) softens food and starts breaking down nutrients right away.
2
Esophagus: The long, stretchy food tube near your windpipe that moves swallowed food from your throat down into your stomach.
3
Stomach & Liver: The stomach churns food with powerful digestive juices into liquid. The liver produces bile and helps process nutrients.
4
Small Intestine & Villi: A long coiled tube! Tiny finger-like bumps called villi absorb nutrients into the bloodstream to nourish cells.
5
Large Intestine: Absorbs leftover water. Undigested parts form solid waste (feces) that is removed from the body.
The Excretory System: Liquid Waste Cleaners
The excretory system removes liquid waste and keeps water balanced.
Kidneys
Two bean-shaped organs that filter waste from blood.
Ureters
Two tubes carrying urine down to the bladder.
Bladder
Stretchy muscular bag that stores urine safely.
Urethra
The tube where urine leaves the body.
🤝 How They Work Together: The digestive system absorbs food nutrients and water into your blood. As cells use nutrients, waste enters the blood. The excretory system (kidneys) filters out that waste with extra water so your body stays clean and healthy!
Fueling Your Body: Balanced Diet & Essential Nutrients
🌾 Carbohydrates
The body's main energy fuel! Found in whole grains, oats, brown rice, and fruits.
🥦 Vitamins & Minerals
Needed in small amounts! Calcium in milk strengthens bones; vitamins boost immunity.
⚖️ Moderation & Water
Treats like fries are okay sometimes, not daily. Drink plenty of fresh water every day!
