Lesson Procedure
1. Warm-up: The Book Slide (5 min)
Hook the students with a simple comparison.
Ask students to slide a heavy textbook across their smooth desk.
Now, have them try to slide the same book across a carpeted area or a rug.
Discussion: Why was one harder than the other? Introduce the word resistance .
2. Video Viewing: SciShow Kids (5 min)
Watch the segment from 3:25 to 4:45.
Play: Focus on Jessi explaining friction.
Pause: At 4:35, have everyone rub their hands together vigorously.
Ask: What do you feel? (Heat!) Why? (Friction generates thermal energy).
3. Experiment: Friction Detectives (20 min)
Hands-on testing and data collection.
Testing: Students slide the wooden block across the four surfaces (sandpaper, wax, foil, carpet).
Recording: Use the Observation Log to rank resistance from Low to High.
Heat Check: Rub a pink eraser vigorously on the desk for 15 seconds. Immediately touch the eraser and the spot on the desk.
4. Reflection: Ice Skating Mystery (10 min)
Synthesize the learning.
Challenge students to explain why ice skates glide so well.
Key Concept: Friction creates heat → heat melts a tiny layer of ice → water acts as a "lubricant" (slippery helper).

Friction: The resistance encountered when surfaces rub together.

Misconception Alert

Part 1: Friction Detectives (Expected Findings)
Material Observation Notes Friction Rating Sandpaper Rough, bumpy surface makes the block catch and "shudder." Hardest to move. High Wax Paper Very smooth and slightly oily feeling. The block glides easily with a light push. Low Aluminum Foil Smooth, but can crinkle. If kept flat, it has very little resistance. Low Carpet Scrap Fuzzy fibers push against the block. Not as rough as sandpaper, but still resists. Medium / High
