Food Chain Quest Lesson Plan
Target Concept: Energy flow through producers, consumers, and decomposers with differentiated IEP supports.
Learning Objective
Students will identify the role of producers, consumers, and decomposers in a food chain and sequence 4 organisms in correct energy order with 80% accuracy using visual or oral support.

Pacing & Facilitation
Phase 1: Multi-Sensory Hook & Activation (8 Min)
Engage
Show a real plant leaf or green paper leaf. Hold up a flashlight (the Sun). Ask: "Where does the plant get its power to grow?"
Adapted Check: Allow students to point to the flashlight, point to the sun icon on their communication board, or say "Sun."
Phase 2: Direct Instruction — "I Do" (12 Min)
Model
Draw or display 4 sequential boxes on the board. Model placing icons in order: Sun → Grass (Producer) → Rabbit (Consumer) → Hawk (Consumer). Explicitly explain: "The arrow means 'gives energy to'."
Key Script: "Grass cannot run to the grocery store. It makes food using the sun. That is why we call it a Producer!"
Phase 3: Guided Practice — "We Do" (12 Min)
Scaffold
Distribute 3 picture cards to student pairs (Clover, Caterpillar, Bird). Call out: "Who made their own food first?" Guide students to place Clover first. Prompt them to orient arrows from left to right.
Phase 4: Independent / Supported Application — "You Do" (15 Min)
Apply
Provide the Food Chain Adapted Worksheet. Students complete the matching, role labeling, and sequence ordering using their individualized response format (pencil, dot marker, pointing, or oral).
Least-to-Most Prompting Hierarchy
Level 1: Natural Wait 5-8 seconds for independent response.
Level 2: Verbal "Which one is the green plant?"
Level 3: Visual/Gesture Point toward the two choices; tap the arrow.
