Case File: 1912 Continental Mystery
Continental Drift Evidence
How did matching fossils, scrambled mountains, and tropical plants in Antarctica prove that our steady continents were once joined as Pangaea?
Alfred Wegener
Meteorologist & Explorer who noticed continents fit like puzzle pieces.
Four Lines of Clues
Puzzle fit, fossil trails, mountain belts, and ancient ice marks.
Guiding Question
What compelling evidence proves landmasses moved across oceans?
1
Evidence Line 1: The Jigsaw Fit
Continental Geography
The Coastline Match
In 1912, Wegener observed that the eastern coastline of South America and the western coastline of Africa lock together almost seamlessly.
The True Continental Edge
Critics argued shorelines erode constantly. Later geologists mapped the underwater continental shelves (submerged edges), revealing an even closer mathematical fit!
Pangaea: "All Earth" ~250-300 Ma
Wegener proposed all existing continents were joined into a single supercontinent surrounded by the super-ocean Panthalassa.
Teacher Talk Prompt:
"Imagine ripping a newspaper in half. If the torn jagged margins fit together, what else must line up across the seam?"
Key Term: Pangaea (Supercontinent) Next: Testing what lines up across the rip!
2
Evidence Line 2: Fossil Correlation
Paleontological Data
Mesosaurus Freshwater Reptile
Identical fossils found only in eastern South America and southwestern Africa.
The Mystery: Mesosaurus was a small, freshwater swimmer. It could not cross 5,000 km of salty Atlantic Ocean!
Conclusion: The freshwater lakes were connected before the ocean opened.
Glossopteris Sub-Polar Fern Tree
Tongue-shaped fossil leaves discovered in South America, Africa, India, Australia, and Antarctica.
The Mystery: Seeds were heavy, woody, and wind-resistant. They could not drift across thousands of miles of ocean waves!
Conclusion: A single continuous landmass shared this temperate flora belt.
Quick CFU: Why couldn't land bridges explain these identical fossil distributions?
No sunken bridges exist on seafloor maps
3
Evidence Line 3: Rock Strata & Mountains
Geologic Correlation
Matching Mountain Ranges
The Appalachian Mountains in eastern North America abruptly end at the Atlantic coast in Newfoundland.
Across the ocean in Greenland, the British Isles, and Norway, the Caledonian Mountains begin with the identical age, rock types, and folded structures!
When continents reassemble, they form one unbroken mountain chain.
Identical Rock Sequences & Diamonds
Brazilian rock layers mirror African rock layers down to exact sediment layers, mineral compositions, and age dates.
Distinctive diamond-bearing volcanic rock (kimberlite) belts in West Africa line up perfectly with matching deposits in South America.
Like tearing a printed page: sentences continue across both torn edges!
Teacher Check: What would disprove this clue? Finding completely different rock ages!
Continuous Strata

Evidence Line 4: Paleoclimate Clues
Glacial Scratches & Coal
Glacial Scratches in Warm Tropics
Deep grooves (striations) carved by moving glaciers 300 million years ago exist in equatorial India, southern Africa, Australia, and Brazil.
Glaciers cannot form at warm sea levels near the equator. These landmasses were once clustered together over the South Pole!
Direction of ice flow radiates outward from one central cap.
Tropical Coal in Frigid Antarctica
Explorers discovered massive coal deposits buried deep under Antarctic ice sheets.
Coal forms only from dense tropical swamp vegetation. Antarctica could never produce swamps at its current polar latitude!
Antarctica was once located near warm, humid latitudes.
Deduction: Either the entire Earth was frozen everywhere, OR the continents moved. Continents Moved!
!
The Fatal Flaw: The Missing Engine
Nature of Science
Why Was Wegener Rejected in 1915?
Wegener had mountains of evidence showing continents had moved, but he could not explain HOW.
He proposed continents plowed through solid ocean basalt like icebreakers, driven by tidal forces. Physicists quickly proved ocean rock is too rigid!
Lesson in Science: An observed pattern needs a valid physical mechanism.
The 1960s Vindication: Plate Tectonics
Decades after Wegener's death, sonar mapped the ocean floor, discovering mid-ocean ridges and seafloor spreading.
Continents do not plow through oceanic crust; entire tectonic plates ride atop the convecting asthenosphere (mantle).
Result: Wegener was right about the drift, and plate tectonics provided the engine!

Evidence Line 1: The Jigsaw Puzzle Fit
Continental Margins
Wegener observed that the eastern coast of South America fits closely into the western coast of Africa.
Why do scientists look at the underwater continental shelf rather than just modern beach shorelines to test this fit?
Evidence Line 2: Fossil Correlation Across Ocean Chasms
Paleontology
Mesosaurus Freshwater Reptile
Found only in eastern South America and southwestern Africa.
Why does this prove continents touched rather than swimming across?
Glossopteris Sub-Polar Fern
Found in South America, Africa, India, Australia, and Antarctica.
Why couldn't wind or ocean currents scatter these seeds across oceans?
Fossil Footprint Note: Additional terrestrial fossils like Cynognathus (land reptile) and Lystrosaurus (herbivorous land reptile) also span these disconnected continents in continuous belts.

Part 1: The Wegener Case File
In 1912, German scientist Alfred Wegener proposed the hypothesis of continental drift. He argued that all current continents were once connected in a single supercontinent known as Pangaea ("All Earth"), surrounded by the vast ancient ocean named Panthalassa.
Evidence Line 1: Jigsaw Fit & Continental Shelf
Sample Student Response: Modern coastlines are constantly eroded and reshaped by waves and changing sea levels. The true boundary of a continent is its submerged continental shelf. When geologists map the continental shelves at depth (~2,000 meters), the edges of South America and Africa match with near-perfect geometric precision.
Evidence Line 2: Fossil Correlation
Mesosaurus Solution:
Mesosaurus was a small, freshwater, coastal-dwelling reptile with an anatomy ill-suited for deep ocean navigation. It could not have survived swimming across 5,000 km of open, hyper-saline ocean water; the freshwater habitats must have been joined when it lived.
Glossopteris Solution:
Glossopteris produced large, dense, woody seeds that were far too heavy to be carried thousands of kilometers by winds, and were not saltwater-buoyant. The sub-polar forest belt spanned Antarctica, India, Australia, Africa, and South America as one landmass.
Teacher Delivery Tip (Slide 3):
Ask students: "If you find identical animal bones on two sides of a pond, what is your first assumption? What if that pond is now the Atlantic Ocean?" Have students trace the continuous bands across a reconstructed globe.
