Gathering & Introduction
- • Gather students in a circle on the rug. Begin by wiggling fingers and talking about how our hands help us "see" the world through touch.
- • Introduce the word texture: "Texture is how something feels when you touch it with your skin."
- • Hold up the main materials (sandpaper, velvet, cotton balls) and give a "preview touch" to students sitting nearby.

- • Divide students into small "Exploration Groups" at tables.
- • Pass out samples to each group. Encourage students to rub the materials on their palms, back of hands, or even their cheeks (gently!).
- • Guided Questioning: "Does that feel like a scratchy cat's tongue?" or "Does this feel like a fluffy cloud?"

- • Return to the circle. Use the Texture Talk Cards to facilitate a group conversation.
- • Encourage students to find "Texture Twins" (e.g., "The sandpaper feels like the brick wall outside!").

- • Recap the three main textures: Rough, Smooth, and Soft.
- • Home Connection: Challenge students to find one "Rough" thing and one "Soft" thing in their bedroom tonight.

Guide them to think of soft objects like a favorite blanket, a teddy bear, or a pet's fur.

Teacher Prompt:
Allow students to express preferences. Some might like the "tickle" of the scratchy sandpaper!

"What is something in this room that feels rough?"
Teacher Prompt:
Have students point to or walk to objects (books, carpet, table leg, wall) and describe them.
Tip: Glue these cards onto colored cardstock or laminate them for a tactile experience for the teacher too!
