Everglades Field Guide
Teacher Lesson Guide & Pacing
3rd - 5th Grade
Art & Science Integration
Learning Objectives
- Observe and identify key animal species in the Florida Everglades.
- Analyze physical adaptations that help animals survive in a "River of Grass."
- Create a detailed scientific sketch with labeled survival traits.
Essential Question
"How do animals change physically to thrive in a world that is half-water and half-land?"
Supply List
- Swamp Sketcher Journal (one per student)
- Graphite pencils & erasers
- Colored pencils (watery greens/blues)
- Projector/Screen for Video Field Trip
Lesson Timeline
0-5 min
Warm-up: The Alligator Watch
Jump straight to the Alligator at 3:06. Ask: "What do you notice about its skin? How does its color help it hide in murky water?" Focus on texture and camouflage.
5-15 min
Viewing: Virtual Field Trip
Watch the video from the beginning. Use the "Pause Points" guide below to spark discussion about habitats and specialized body parts.
15-40 min
Activity: Swamp Sketching
Students choose one animal they saw. They must draw it accurately and label 3 physical traits (adaptations) that help it survive in the wet environment.
40-45 min
Closure: Gallery Walk
Place journals on desks. Students walk around silently, looking for a label or adaptation they hadn't noticed before.
Video Pause Points Guide
1:06
Concept: River of Grass
Ask: "Why would a wetland be called a 'river'? How is this water moving?" (Discuss slow flow over miles of grass).
1:50
Habitat: Hammocks
Ask: "Predict which animals live on these dry islands versus the water. Why is a dry spot important in a swamp?"
2:26
Adaptation: Anhinga
Ask: "Why is this bird spreading its wings? If it swims in water, why does it need to dry off?" (Discuss oil glands and weight).
2:55
Focus: Manatees & Raccoons
Observe: "Look at the manatee's tail shape. Look at the raccoon's paws. How do these shapes help them find food or move?"
3:46
Big Picture: Conservation
Ask: "How does saving this 'murky swamp' help people living in big cities in Florida?" (Clean drinking water connection).
Ecosystem
A community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Brackish
Water that is a mix of fresh and salt water, found where rivers meet the sea.
Hammock
A small island of hardwood trees rising above the surrounding wetlands.
Adaptation
A physical trait or behavior that helps an animal survive in its specific environment.

Warm-Up: Swamp Resident
5 Minutes
"Look at the American Alligator at 3:06 in our video."
Discuss with a Partner:
- What do you notice about its texture?
- How does its color help it hide?
Observe the "Scutes" (bony plates) on its back!

Choose Your Subject
Which animal adaptation will you investigate?
Wading Birds
Herons and Egrets have long, thin legs and sharp beaks.
Adaptation Focus
How do they walk through water without splashing?
Manatees
These "sea cows" have paddle-like tails and thick, grey skin.
Adaptation Focus
How does their body shape help them glide?
Raccoons
Clever foragers that use their hands to "wash" food in the water.
Adaptation Focus
How do their "hands" help them find food in mud?
Nature Journaling
1
Scientific Sketch
Draw one animal accurately. Focus on its shape and unique features.
2
Label 3 Traits
Identify 3 physical parts (like webbed feet or a long neck) that help it survive in the water.
3
Add Detail
Use colored pencils to show the habitat (plants, water, mud).
Gallery Walk
"Leave your journal on your desk. Walk silently and find one adaptation that surprises you or that you didn't draw."
