Topic: Abiotic Factors & Soil pH
Lesson Objective
Students will investigate how abiotic soil properties (specifically acidity/pH) affect plant growth and predict how these changes ripple through an entire ecosystem's food web.
Key Vocabulary
Abiotic Factor: Non-living chemical/physical parts of the environment.
Humus: Dark organic matter from decayed plants/animals.
Pores: Spaces between soil particles for air and water.
pH/Acidity: The measure of how acidic or basic a substance is.

Instructional Sequence
Warm-up: The Hydrangea Mystery
5 Minutes
Show the pink and blue hydrangea slides. Challenge students to guess why the same plant grows different colors. Explanation: In acidic soil (pH < 5.5), hydrangeas are blue. In alkaline soil (pH > 6.5), they are pink.
Video Exploration: Abiotic Factors
5 Minutes
Play the video: Abiotic Factors in Ecosystems – Soil and Minerals . Focus on the segment 1:23-1:40 . Pause and discuss the quote: "Soil acidity and characteristics determine plant types, which then determine the animal types."
Hands-on Lab: Soil pH Testing
25 Minutes
Students work in groups to test 3 samples. Safety Note: Remind students not to taste soil or reagents. Wash hands after the lab.
Teaching Tip: If using vinegar/baking soda instead of pH strips: Vinegar fizzes in basic/alkaline soil. Baking soda mixed with wet soil fizzes in acidic soil.
Closure: Ecosystem Ripples
5 Minutes
Distribute the Exit Ticket. Prompt: "If the soil acidity changes, what happens to the animals in that ecosystem?" Encourage students to think about the food chain (Soil → Plants → Animals).
Differentiation & Support
Scaffolding:
Provide a word bank for the lab report conclusion. Use the "Fizz Test" (Vinegar/Soda) for a more visual, less abstract experience than pH strips.
Extension:
Ask advanced students to research "acid rain" and its impact on forest ecosystems based on what they learned about soil pH today.
