1 ENGAGE: Bell Ringer & Mystery Hook
12 Minutes
Bell Ringer (3 min): Instruct students to write down 3 quick observations they made on their way to school today, labeling whether each is a description (e.g. "red car") or a measurement/count (e.g. "20-minute walk").
Hook Setup: Have students fold a blank scrap sheet of paper in half, labeling one side Sights & Feels and the other Numbers & Measures.
Video Playback: Play the science experiment short video. Instruct students to write down everything they observe happening. Play it once for raw amazement, and a second time specifically for logging data.
Teacher Prompt: "Detectives, what did you see, hear, or feel? Did you notice any numbers, clocks, counts, or measurements? Write them under the correct columns!"
2 EXPLORE: Sorting the Clues
10 Minutes
Think-Pair-Share: Have students pair up and compare their scrap paper observation columns. Have them identify which side relied on their 5 senses and which side relied on numerical measurements.
Board Share: Draw a T-Chart on the board. Ask pairs to share one observation from each column. List sensory observations on the left and numerical observations on the right.

3 EXPLAIN: Formal Definitions & Slide Drill
10 Minutes
Introduce Definitions: Direct students to the slides to transition from informal concepts to formal vocabulary:
- Qualitative: Descriptions based on the 5 senses (quality, attributes, appearance). Hint: Qualitative → Quality.
- Quantitative: Measurements involving numbers, quantities, and appropriate units. Hint: Quantitative → Quantity.
Interactive Drill: Run the quick-fire slide game "Qual or Quant?" to verify student understanding before starting the sheet.
4 ELABORATE: Case Worksheet Investigation
15 Minutes
Worksheet Walkthrough: Distribute the worksheet. Guide students through each part:
- Part 1 (Reading): Read text selection and answer questions 1–3 in complete sentences.
- Part 2 (Fill-In): Classify items by writing "qual" or "quant" in the blanks.
- Part 3 (Highlighters): Read "Bean Growth Observations". Use yellow highlighter for qualitative descriptions (e.g., "hard", "dry") and blue for quantitative (e.g., "five grams", "4mm").
- Part 4 (Application): Log 5 qualitative and 5 quantitative observations of peers or the room.
5 EVALUATE: Debrief & Exit Ticket

Formative Check: Collect worksheets and use Part 2 & Part 3 as indicators of mastery.
Key Question: "Why do scientists need both? Can an experiment be complete with only one?"

Provide sentence starters for Part 1 (e.g., "A qualitative observation is..."). Match tactile objects (marshmallows and blocks) before the worksheet.

Have advanced learners convert sentences in Part 3 into testable hypotheses, or devise a numerical scale to measure qualitative data (e.g., Marshmallow Fluffiness Index).
Key Misconceptions to Monitor
- Unit Neglect: Writing numbers without labels (e.g., "15" instead of "15 mL"). Emphasize labels.
- Word-Numbers: "One cell" or "sixty-seven years" might be misclassified as qualitative. Remind them that numbers can be written as words and still represent quantities.
- Inferences vs. Observations: Confusing what they observe with what they assume (e.g., observing "smoke" vs. assuming "it is on fire").
