Earth Day Celebration & Collaborative Book Project

Learning Objectives
- Identify elements of nature that make our world "wonderful."
- Practice fine motor skills through coloring and precise cutting.
- Contribute to a collaborative class project.
- Connect music and literature to environmental appreciation.
Materials Needed
- An Earth Day themed storybook
- Class Book Templates (Lyric circles)
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Scissors
- Stapler or book binding coils
- Audio/Visual equipment for music video

Instructional Steps

Read an Earth Day Story
Read an Earth Day story to the class. Discuss themes of nature, protection of resources, and the beauty of our planet. Ask students to share their favorite parts of the Earth.

Show the Music Video
Show students a YouTube video of the "What a Wonderful World" song by Louis Armstrong. Listen for things the singer sees and how it connects to our story.

Color & Cut Book Pages
Have each child color a page to make a class book. Remind them to color beautifully and then carefully cut out the circle when they finish coloring.

Extra Pages for Early Finishers
If you have more lyric pages than students, early finishers can do extra pages to ensure the whole song is included in your class book.

Adjust for Class Size
If you have a larger group, use the optional pieces: Title Page, End Page, and "ooooo, yeah!" pieces. Use these only if you want to or need more pages for your kids!

Assemble & Celebrate
Once everyone is done, put the pages in order, staple the book, & play the song again as you show the pages the class created to the whole group!

Enjoy in Class Library
Keep the book in your class library for kids to read and enjoy! These are also great to put out during conference time to show off student work.
