Dog Designer Reading Passage

Dog Designer Reading Passage
Read the following passage carefully to learn how wild animals became our beloved domestic pets.
🐺 Part 1: The Wild Wolves of the Past
Over fifteen thousand years ago, there were no friendly pet dogs running around parks. Instead, there were only wild, fierce gray wolves. Wolves lived in wild packs, hunting for meat and protecting their territory. Most wolves were terrified of humans and would run away, but a small number of wolves were naturally friendlier and braver. These friendlier wolves began hanging around early human campsites, searching for leftover scraps of meat.
Humans quickly noticed that these friendly wolves were very useful! They could bark to sound an alarm if a predator was near, and their incredible sense of smell made them excellent hunting partners. Humans and friendly wolves began to work as a team.
🧬 Part 2: Selecting Favorite Traits
Ancient humans wanted more of these useful, friendly wolves. They did this by choosing the friendliest male wolf and the friendliest female wolf and letting them breed. Their babies, or offspring, inherited their parents' calm attitude and loyalty. This process is called artificial selection, because humans are the ones selecting which parents get to have babies.
Over hundreds of years, humans kept selecting for different traits (physical or behavioral features). If a family needed a dog to guard sheep, they only bred the bravest and most watchful dogs. If they needed a dog to catch fast rabbits, they only bred the speediest dogs with the longest legs.
🐩 Part 3: The Incredible Variety of Modern Dogs
By selecting different traits over many generations, humans transformed the single wild wolf ancestor into hundreds of unique dog breeds. From tiny, curly-haired Toy Poodles to massive, fluffy Siberian Huskies, every dog breed in the world today is a result of humans guiding their reproduction to fit our needs.
