Have you ever looked at the moon and wished you could see it up close? That is exactly what a telescope does! A telescope is a tool that scientists use to see things that are very far away. It works like a giant eye that gathers more light than your own eyes can.
Most telescopes use either curved pieces of glass called lenses or shiny mirrors . These parts help catch light from stars and planets. The light is then focused into a small point. When you look through the eyepiece, the object looks much bigger, brighter, and closer!
Telescopes don't just "zoom in." They "gather light." Think of a telescope like a bucket. A bigger bucket catches more rain. A bigger telescope catches more light! This lets us see tiny, dim stars that are millions of miles away in the dark night sky.

The Earth's air is great for breathing, but it is blurry for looking at stars. That is why scientists put giant telescopes in space! Two of the most famous space telescopes are Hubble and James Webb .
The Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990. It is about the size of a school bus. Hubble sees "visible light," which is the same kind of light our eyes see. It has shown us beautiful, colorful pictures of galaxies and gas clouds for over 30 years.
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is much newer and bigger. It has a giant mirror covered in gold that is as wide as a tennis court! Gold is very good at reflecting infrared light , which is like heat. This lets Webb see through thick dust clouds to find hidden stars and the very first galaxies ever made.
