Survival Superpowers Lesson Guide Survival Superpowers
Teacher Facilitation Guide • 2nd Grade Science
Duration 45 MIN
Learning Objective
Students will understand the concept of 'adaptation' and how specific physical traits (like size and feathers) help animals survive environmental changes.
Materials Checklist
Winter Coat & Swimsuit (for Hook)
Dino Survival Slides
Asteroid Adventure Activity Pack
Scissors (for cutting tokens)
1
The Hook: Blizzard Prep (5 min)
Hold up a heavy winter coat and a swimsuit.
Ask: "If we were going outside right now into a giant blizzard, which of these is the better 'adaptation' to help us stay warm and alive? Why?"
Concept: Introduce 'Adaptation' as a tool or trait that helps an animal live in its specific home.
2
Video Viewing & Vocabulary (5 min)
SciShow Kids: It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's a DINOSAUR!
[0:40] Pause Point: Ask students why the meat-eaters died even though the asteroid didn't hit them (Food Chain: no plants → no plant-eaters → no meat-eaters).
[1:00] Pause Point: Define Adaptation . "A trait or body part that helps an animal survive."
3
Discussion: Two Key Secrets (10 min)
Feathers
Before they were for flying, they were for keeping warm during the "big cold" after the asteroid.
Size (The Pineapple Rule)
Small animals need less food . When the world ran out of plants, being small was a huge advantage.
4
Main Activity: Surviving the Asteroid (20 min)
Setup: Scatter "Food Tokens" (leaves/meat) around the room. Ensure there isn't enough for everyone to "survive" as a big dino.
Roles: Assign students as Big Dinos (need 5 tokens) or Dino-Birds (need 1 token).
Game: Students have 60 seconds to gather their required food. Count how many of each group survived the "famine."
