Learning Objective
Students will model how sound waves transfer energy from a source to a receiver (ear) by participating in a kinesthetic activity and illustrating the process.
Materials Needed
- Large open space for movement
- "Sound Voyage Comic" worksheet
- Colored pencils or markers
- Sound Wave Anchor Chart
- Video: "Sound, Vibrations and Sound Waves"

A rapid back-and-forth motion.

Instructional Sequence

Warm-up: The Invisible Wave (5 min)
Watch the animation of blue sound waves entering the ear (Timestamp 1:23). Ask: "If we can't see sound in the air, how does the video show us what is happening?"
"Sound waves reach our ears and make tiny parts inside vibrate too."

Video Deep Dive (5 min)
Review the core definition at (Timestamp 1:15): "Air around the object vibrates and moves outward." Have students touch their throats and hum to feel the vibration.

Kinesthetic Model: The Human Wave (20 min)
Students stand in a shoulder-to-shoulder line representing air particles.
- First Student: The 'Source' (e.g., a giant drum).
- Last Student: The 'Ear' (the receiver).
- Action: The Source gently nudges the next student's shoulder. Each student passes the "nudge" (energy) down the line.
Critical Discussion Point:
Ask: "Did the first student (Source) walk all the way to the end of the line? No! The particles stayed in their spot, but the energy moved across the room."

Closure: Comic Strip Artist (10 min)
Distribute the worksheet. Students illustrate a 4-panel story showing sound moving from a drum to an ear. Encourage them to draw "particle dots" to show the wave passing through.
Discussion Anchors
Prediction (2:10): "What do you think will happen to the rice? Why?"
The Science (2:35): "The spoon never touched the bowl. So what actually pushed the rice up into the air?"
Misconception Alert!
Students often think air travels with the sound (like wind). Remind them of the kinesthetic model: the "particle" stays in place, just wiggling back and forth. Only the wave moves.

Stand shoulder-to-shoulder in a long line. You are the air particles!

Start Source
The first person (vibration) gently nudges the next person's arm.

Pass Energy
Pass the nudge all the way to the last person (the ear). Don't move your feet!
Comic Mission
Draw the journey of a sound wave! Show how it starts at a drum and ends at an ear.
Remember: Label the energy passing through the air!
