Teacher Facilitation Guide
Mission Objective
Students will investigate the physical properties of sound by observing vibrations, testing how sound travels through different mediums (solids, liquids, and gases), and understanding the basic mechanics of human hearing.

Lab Supplies
Tuning forks & water bowls

The Launch (15 Mins)
The "Hum" Test
Ask students to place two fingers gently on their throats and hum a low note, then a high note. Ask: "What do you feel moving under your fingers?"
Key Concept:
Vibrations are the source of all sound. No vibration = No sound.
Lab Stations: The Investigation
Station 1: Seeing Sound
Setup: Stretch plastic wrap tightly over a bowl. Sprinkle rice on top.
Action: Students bang a drum or metal tray near the bowl without touching it.
Observation: The rice "dances" because the air molecules are vibrating and hitting the plastic wrap.
Station 2: The String Phone
Setup: Two cups connected by a long string.
Action: Students test the phone with a slack string vs. a tight string. Try whispering.
Insight: Sound travels better through solids (string) than gases (air) because molecules are closer together.
Station 3: Pitch Power
Setup: Rulers held against a desk edge, overhanging.
Action: Pluck the ruler with a long overhang vs. a short overhang.
Discovery: Shorter length = faster vibration = higher pitch. Longer length = slower vibration = lower pitch.
