The Mission
Set up three hands-on exploration stations. Students will rotate in small groups, spending about 5 minutes at each station. Use the "Sense Detective Handbook" to record findings.

Station 1: I Spy Jar (Sight)
Setup: Fill a clear plastic jar 3/4 full with dry rice or birdseed. Hide 5-6 small items inside (beads, buttons, a plastic bug, a die, a coin). Tape the lid shut securely.
Prompt: "Can you find the red bead? What else is hiding in the rice? Use your eyes!"
Station 2: Shaker Jars (Hearing)
Setup: Take 3 identical opaque containers (empty yogurt tubs, film canisters, or spice jars covered in paper). Fill Jar A with coins (loud/metal), Jar B with cotton balls (silent), and Jar C with rice (rhythmic/softer).
Prompt: "Shake it gently near your ear. Is it loud or quiet? Can you guess what's inside?"
Station 3: Mystery Box (Touch)
Setup: Use a shoebox. Cut a hole in one side large enough for a child's arm. Cover the hole with a fabric flap or an old sock (toe cut off) to keep the inside "secret." Place one object at a time inside (e.g., a pinecone, a velvet ribbon, a smooth stone, a rubber ball).
Prompt: "Keep your eyes out! Reach in and tell me—does it feel bumpy, soft, or cold?"

Encourage students to use "describing words": rough, fuzzy, sharp, high-pitched, sparkling, hidden.
Safety Check
Ensure all small objects are too large to be a choking hazard and that shaker jars are taped shut.
