Lesson: Rock Raiders

Learning Objective
Students will be able to categorize rocks into three main types (Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic) based on visual characteristics such as layers, crystals, and texture.
Preparation & Materials
Mystery Box: A box with 3 rocks (Granite, Sandstone, Slate).
Rock Samples: Sets of 6-9 rocks per group (Basalt, Obsidian, Limestone, Marble, etc.).
Tools: Magnifying glasses (1 per student or pair).
Printables: Rock Cycle Mats and Field Notes Worksheets.
Key Vocabulary
Igneous
"Fire-born" rocks from cooled magma or lava. (Look for crystals or air bubbles).
Sedimentary
Formed from layers of sand/mud pressed together. (Look for grains or horizontal layers).
Metamorphic
"Changed" rocks through intense heat and pressure. (Look for wavy bands or "morphed" minerals).
Instructional Sequence

Warm-up: The Mystery Box (5 min)
Pass the box around. Have students reach in (without looking) and describe textures.
"Does it feel smooth like glass, or rough like sand? Can you feel any edges?"

Watch "The Rock Cycle - Earth Science for Kids!". Use these pause points:
1:05 (Weathering): Ask students to predict the difference between weathering and erosion.
2:10 (Grand Canyon): Discuss how the river carved the layers.
4:11 (The Full Cycle): Pause on the diagram. Have students trace the path from Magma to Metamorphic.

Activity: Rock Raiders Sorting (20 min)
Hand out the Rock Cycle Mats and Field Notes .
Students use magnifying glasses to look for visual clues mentioned in the video. They place physical rocks onto the correct quadrant of the mat and record observations in their notes.

Closure & Share-out (10 min)
Pick one rock. Ask: "Why did you put this rock in the Sedimentary pile?" Look for answers mentioning "layers" or "it looks like sand glued together."
Common Misconceptions
Melting vs. Morphing
Remind students that metamorphic rocks change from heat/pressure BUT DON'T MELT. If they melt, they become magma and start over as igneous.
Weathering vs. Erosion
Weathering = BREAKS it. Erosion = TAKES it. Use the "Sandpaper vs. River" analogy from the video.

Pro Tips for Geologists:
Crystals? If they are big and shiny, it's likely Igneous. If they are tiny and sparkly, it might be Metamorphic.
Layers? If they look like a stack of pancakes, it's Sedimentary. If they look wavy or squished, it's Metamorphic.
