The Hook: Mystery Box Reveal (10 mins)
Show a vibrant green plant and a second plant that has been kept completely in the dark for a week. Ask: "Why do you think these plants look so different? What super power does this green one have?" Lead students to share what they already know about what plants need to grow.

The Setup: Creating Shields (15 mins)
Demonstrate how to gently clip a folded aluminum foil rectangle over half of a healthy leaf. Explain that this leaf shield will block 100% of light while leaving the other half exposed. Students will do this on classroom plants to monitor over the next week.

Immediate Lab: Examining the Pre-Shielded Plants (25 mins)
Since plants react slowly, distribute pre-prepared plants shielded 3-5 days ago. Instruct student teams to unclip the foil. Ask them to closely inspect the leaf underneath using a magnifying glass. What happened to the color, texture, and strength of the covered portion compared to the light portion?

STATION MANAGEMENT & DIFFERENTIATION
Part 2 of 2
Station Rotation Strategy (8-10 Mins per Station)
Divide the classroom into 4 groups. Rotate groups clockwise. Use the printed Station Rotation Cards to establish physical stations.
1 Focus Lab Station
Activity: Students unclip pre-prepared foil shields, inspect the dual-toned leaves with hand lenses, and sketch results on page 1 of their Lab Sheet.
2 Setup Station
Activity: Students select a new, healthy leaf on their team plant, cut foil squares, fold them gently over half of the leaf, and write their team name on the tape.
3 Vocab Explorer Station
Activity: Students use the classroom Anchor Chart to locate vocabulary words: Chlorophyll, Photosynthesis, Stomata , and match them with definitions.
4 Plant Thinker Station
Activity: Critical thinking prompts. Why do forests have tall trees? Why do some house plants wilt on dark shelves? Write answers in the "Think Like a Botanist" zone.
Facilitator Prompts & Misconception Alert
Common Misconception Students often think plants eat soil or drink water to gain food. Remind them: Water and soil are ingredients, but sunlight is the power that turns them into real plant sugars!

"What would happen to a plant with all its leaves covered?"
Differentiation Strategies
Scaffolding (ELL/SpEd): Provide pre-drawn leaf outlines for sketches. Pair with a reading buddy at Station 3. Use visual anchor cards for matching.
Standard Level: Complete standard observations, draft scientific claims, and draw before/after changes independently.
Extension (Highly Capable): Hypothesize what happens if you cover leaves in red cellophane vs foil. Will colored light still allow food production?

The Photosynthesis Process
1. Sunlight
Leaves are solar panels! They trap light using green chlorophyll .
2. Carbon Dioxide
A gas in the air that enters the leaf through microscopic mouth-like pores called stomata .
3. Water
Roots absorb water from the soil, pumping it all the way up through the stem into the leaf veins.

High-energy sugar (glucose) is stored as food to help the plant grow strong stems and delicious fruit!
Oxygen
The leaf releases fresh oxygen back into the air! This is the air that humans and animals breathe.
What is Chlorophyll?
The secret green substance inside plants. Think of it as a microscopic solar catcher! Without it, plants cannot trap sunlight. When leaves lack light, they stop making chlorophyll and turn pale yellow or brown.
What are Stomata?
Tiny trapdoors on the bottom of leaves. They are so small you need a microscope to see them! They open to swallow carbon dioxide from the air and close to keep water from leaking out.

Goal: Examine the Sun Shields

Locate your team's pre-prepared plant . Gently unclip the aluminum foil shield from the leaf.

Use your hand magnifier to look closely at both sides of the leaf. Look at the colors and feel the leaf texture!

Open your Botanist Journal (Page 1) and color your findings. Label the pale side and the bright green side!
Botanist Secret: Look at the veins in the pale yellow section. Are they still green? Why?

THE SETUP ZONE
Goal: Build Your Own Experiment
A
Pick a healthy, bright green leaf on your plant. Do not pluck it off! It must stay attached to stay alive.
B
Take a small piece of aluminum foil. Fold it snugly over exactly half of the leaf. Use a paper clip to hold it firm.
C
Draw your setup in the Part 2 Box of your Lab Sheet. Write your team's name on a piece of tape on the pot!
Be Gentle! Don't squeeze the leaf stem too hard or wrap the clip too tightly, or the leaf might break off.
