A Giant Chimney on Earth's Crust
It is an opening in the Earth's surface that lets hot stuff escape from deep inside.
Volcanoes aren't just regular mountains—they are built by their own eruptions!
There are active volcanoes on land, under the sea, and even on ice!
FUN FACT!
The largest volcano in our whole solar system is not on Earth—it is on the planet Mars ! It's called Olympus Mons.

Magma Chamber
Deep underneath the volcano is a giant pool of hot, liquid rock.
This super hot, melting rock is called magma . Think of this as the volcano's kitchen where everything heats up!

It is so hot down there that rocks melt into thick, runny liquid like warm soup.

As the magma pools and heats up, it gets squished and starts looking for a way out!

Volcano Anatomy Part 2: Vent & Crater
The Vent
The vent is the main tube or pipe that runs from the magma chamber up to the surface.
Think of it like a giant soda straw. When the magma wants to go up, it flows straight through this tube!
The Crater
The crater is the bowl-shaped opening at the very top of the volcano.
This is the volcano's mouth! It is where magma, ash, and rocks explode out into the sky.

A step-by-step facilitation guide for running the baking soda and vinegar experiment safely and effectively in 30 minutes.
Materials Checklist
Baking soda (1 box per group)
White vinegar (1 bottle)
Dish soap (adds extra foam!)
Red/yellow food coloring
Small plastic cups or bottles
Outdoor space (dirt/mulch)
Safety First!
Keep a safe distance (3 feet) once the vinegar is poured.
Do not taste or eat the vinegar or baking soda.
Rinse immediately with water if vinegar splashes in eyes.
The 30-Minute Eruption Routine

Classroom Prep (5 Mins)
Review predictions from yesterday. Remind students of outdoor safety and assign them into teams of 3-4 scientists.

Outdoor Setup (10 Mins)
Take students outside. Have each group pile dirt, sand, or mulch around their plastic bottle to form a mountain "crater".

The Chemical Reaction (10 Mins)
Recipe: Put 3 spoonfuls of baking soda, 3 drops of dish soap, and 3 drops of red color inside the bottle. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar and stand back!

Observe & Reset (5 Mins)
Prompt students to examine the color, bubbles, and noise. Clean up all cups and plastic wrappers before returning inside.
Outdoor Discussion Prompts
🗣️ "What do you hear?" (Listen for the fizzing sound of Carbon Dioxide gas).
🗣️ "What do you see?" (Look at the bubbles forming the foamy red lava).
🗣️ "Does this match your hypothesis?" (Did it react the way you predicted?)
Troubleshooting the Blast-off
If your volcano doesn't bubble up: make sure you added enough baking soda, or add an extra splash of fresh vinegar! Adding dish soap is highly recommended because it captures the gas bubbles and creates a thicker, slower-flowing, realistic lava stream rather than a quick watery splash.

This rock is called pumice , and it is so light and full of air holes that it can actually float on water !

This beautiful rock is called obsidian , and it has been used for thousands of years to make tools!
