• 8–10 pre-cut corrugated cardboard strips (approx. 2" × 4")
• 1 square cardboard base piece (approx. 5" × 5")
• 1 wooden craft stick or scrap tab (for pressing hot glue)
• Pencil, ruler, and safety scissors
Glue Stations (1 per pair)
• 1 Low-temp or dual-temp hot glue gun on heat-safe silicone tile
• 4 mini glue sticks per pair
• 1 bowl of cool water with paper towels (burn defense)
• 1 pair silicone finger guards (recommended for beginners)
• Masking tape taped to bench to anchor electrical cords
Non-Negotiable Safety Protocols (Review Prior to Powering On)
1. The Nozzle is Off-Limits
Metal tip reaches 250°F–380°F. Never touch the nozzle tip or freshly extruded liquid bead with bare skin.
2. Tool-Assisted Pressure
Use a wooden craft stick or scrap cardboard spacer to firmly press joints together—never compress hot glue with bare fingertips.
3. First Aid Immediate Action
If hot glue touches skin: plunge directly into the station water bowl immediately. Do NOT peel glue off hot skin; submerge first.
Instructional Procedure (Part 1)
1 Phase 1: Direct Demo & Adhesive Physics (15 min) Live Modeling
Demonstrate the difference between weak "surface sitting" glue and strong "compressed mechanical bonding." Model the 15-Second Hold Rule : hot glue achieves 80% strength only as it cools from clear liquid to cloudy solid while held steady. Demonstrate the 4 primary joint geometries (Edge-to-Edge, L, T, Cross). Show how cardboard corrugation flutes behave under tension and shear.
2 Phase 2: Sketchbook Blueprinting (15 min) 2D Technical Drawing
Students open their sketchbooks and divide a page into 4 quadrantal cells. They illustrate Edge-to-Edge, L-Connection, T-Connection, and Cross Connection using 3D isometric or perspective sketches. Students must annotate: (a) where the glue fillet goes, (b) the grain/flute direction of each piece, and (c) the primary mechanical weakness of each joint.

3 Phase 3: The 3D Specimen Build Challenge (25–30 min) Hands-on Lab
Students construct a compact freestanding sculpture on a 5"×5" base that successfully integrates at least one of each of the four connections . Circulate to check adhesive volume (avoid huge pools of glue) and joint compression. Encourage gussets, flanges, or interlocking slots for cross joints. Enforce workstation clean lines: no hanging glue cobwebs.
4 Phase 4: Stress-Test Gallery & Reflection (10 min) Peer Review
Students conduct the "Gentle Shake & Flick Test" to verify bond permanence. Students label each joint on their actual structure with small paper tags or marker numbers, then complete their self-reflection rubric.

Three Golden Rules of Hot Glue
1. Never Touch the Tip
The metal nozzle tip gets super hot (nearly 400°F). Keep your fingers away from the tip and wet glue!
2. Press with a Stick
Never use your bare fingers to squeeze hot glue joints. Always press down using a wooden craft stick.
3. Cold Water Bowl
If hot glue touches your skin, dip your hand straight into the cool water bowl right away. Do not pull it off!
Glue Gun Rest: Always park the gun standing up on its kickstand over the tile. Never lay it flat on the table!
How Glue Works
The 15-Second Freeze Rule
Count to 15!
Hot glue doesn't dry by air—it freezes solid as it cools. If you let go too soon, the joint will snap off!
1 Put glue on and push the pieces together right away.
2 Hold totally still with your stick for 15 slow seconds.
3 Look for cloudy: It's ready when the glue turns cloudy!
Stop the Messy Cobwebs!
Stop glue strings from trailing all over your project using the Swirl & Wipe move:
1. Let go of the glue trigger.
2. Draw a tiny circle with the tip against cardboard.
3. Wipe the tip along the edge as you lift away.
Clean, neat joints with zero strings!
Remember: Wiggling a piece while it cools ruins the bond!
Step 1: Planning

In your guide or sketchbook, divide your page into 4 boxes. You will draw and label these four joints:
